Chapter Twenty-One: Final Confrontation

Marianna sat on the plane nervous as hell. She almost dreaded returning to Phoenix. She had no idea what they would find, but she knew it wouldn't be good. She turned to Dusk who was just sitting staring at a picture of Vanessa and himself. Vanessa had her arms around him and they had been standing near the woods that were next to her cabin. She looked over and saw the picture hoping the poor woman was alright. She had enough to be guilty about, but if something happened to Vanessa she would never forgive herself.

She tried to concentrate on something else and reached into her carry on bag and took out a book. It was one of her favorites, Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island. She tried hard to concentrate on reading, but it was no use. All she could think about was what Marcus could have been doing to Vanessa. Dusk had gone to the bathroom, but she looked at her watch and noticed that he had been gone for a while. She was a little concerned, but she knew how to take care of himself and there weren't many places a person could go to on a plane.

She put her book down and took out her photo album. There were many pictures of people that she loved, many of which were gone. The first picture was one of her parents on their wedding day. Her mother Josephine looked so beautiful. How she wished she could remember her like this, smiling with her eyes glowing with happiness, but all she thought about was how she died and didn't die.

She mother lived on inside of her and not symbolically. Her mind was actually trapped inside of her and had been since the moment she died. Even though there were times when she could see her mother's thoughts, for the most part she was quiet. She took another stab at her book when Dusk finally returned to his seat.

She got read a whole paragraph when Dusk's opened his mouth to speak. "How long before we land?"

Marianna looked up from her book and over at Dusk. "A few more hours," she said and tried to go back to reading, but Dusk was fidgeting so much it was making her nervous. "Just calm down, we can't do anything until the plane lands."

"I know, but I just can't help it," he said and jerked his head back in frustration and tried to watch the movie. It was some teen sex comedy that made him roll his eyes. He sat back in his chair as much as he could and let out a long breath.

Marianna went back to her book even though Vanessa's still troubled her mind.
