39: Consider Such a Thing

I couldn’t help but find myself keenly aware of coach’s hand on my lower back. He didn’t mean anything by it, I was sure of it. The only reason it even rested there was so he could keep track of where I was as we stood amongst a group of chattering people. Yet, try as I might to ignore it, I couldn’t help but focus on it.

It’s not like he was doing anything special as it rested there. No, it just sat on the small of my back just before where my ass started. It was warm and almost soothing where it rested on top of the thin fabric of my lacey cotton shirt. And, where the shirt had rolled slightly up the curves of my waistline, his pinky finger was directly on my skin.

Even with how gentle of a touch his lingering hand held, it still felt firmly in place. I could picture his hand perfectly just from the sensation. It was bigger than my hand. It was a man’s hands, not a boy’s. His fingers were a little long yet still had enough meat on them to keep them from being stick-like and rather were a tad on the muscular side instead. I could imagine the slight wear they’d have from all of the basketball he played.

He’s my coach! I had to remind myself as my mind wandered on its own. Just how would those hands feel against my bare skin if they felt this good even through a shirt?

I looked to coach, my cheeks heating the slightest at how I could even consider such a thing. It was pure crazy! Yet, as he turned and flashed a smile towards me, I couldn’t help but smile back.

He was, after all, just the assistant coach. No, he was Lucas outside of practice. We’d agreed on that much, and this was definitely not practice.

Thankfully I was interrupted from my wandering thoughts by a voice I knew well.

“You’re looking better,” Preston commented, joining the group the moment it began to thin out. I was grateful for more reasons than just the fact he’d saved me from terribly impure thoughts involving an incredibly sexy, sweat dripping shirtless coach – no – assistant coach and some interesting workouts he’d devised just for the two of us. He’d also given me someone to talk to while people I’d never seen before in my life talked enthusiastically with Lucas as though he were their lifelong best friend. “Glad you decided to stay.”

I returned his genuine smile with one of my own. “What can I say? I was hoping to see more of my most favorite person while I still have a valid excuse to,” I teased.

His smile became an adorable playful grin. “You never need an excuse to see me Kara. I’m always available if it’s you.”

“Then why have I seen so little of you lately?” I asked, the question an honest one. I’d hoped, after getting to know him so well at the last party, that I’d be able to spend more time with him.

Preston was as goodlooking as he was an amazing guy. His brown eyes not only drew attention with how captivating they were, but paid attention as well. They’d light up with his emotions and twinkle in playful mischief as he talked. And his lips, which were perfectly curved to fit onto his slightly squared jaw, turned up into one of the most honest and contagious smiles I’d ever seen.

However, at this moment, he wasn’t smiling. Rather his lips were forming a small discontent frown. “I know. Logan’s been keeping me away,” he admitted. Beneath his fray of dirty blonde hair his eyes scanned the nearby crowd. I followed his gaze as it landed on Logan. “I think he feels like I’m a bad influence on you.”
