how can i refuse? yeah you rid me of the blues

ever since you came into my life

before he had been able to digest dan's sudden adventurousness, philip had been slumped in the front seat of a rather battered ford fiesta, and had never felt equally comfortable as he did anxious. dan sat beside him rather confidently, his hands casually clenched to the wheel with ease and the corners of his mouth just about lifting up into a smile. for a few minutes, they stayed in silent suspension, neither of them daring to say a word. in philip's case, he was certain that if he were to open his mouth to say something, he wouldn't be able to form any sentences. he was already far too focused on not allowing his eyes to wander where they wouldn't be able look away.

"so, philip," dan marvelled, the name melodically rolling off of his tongue. phillip quickly recalled that this was the first time he had ever called him by his name, and in doing so instantly felt nervous at being directly addressed.

"can i call you phil? it seems far less formal to me. i like it, how about you?"

philip bashfully shrugged, before barely nodding. "o-okay."

he nervously threw his gaze back down to the littered car floor.

"so, phil," dan enthusiastically continued, following his pause to accentuate the name again, "have you ever been to a concert?"

philip pondered for a moment. he soon realised that the closest thing to a concert he had ever attended were the yearly church recitals that his mother organised - which primarily consisted of an off-key and rather elderly choir reprising "all things bright and beautiful" in their shrillest of pitches.

"n-no...why..?" he gently whispered in response, this time raising his eyes a little, so that they were almost level with dan's. almost.

dan smirked, one eyebrow lifting suggestively as he swiftly turned at a corner, before rashly pulling the car to a abrupt stop.

"well, looks like i'm about to take your concert virginity then, church boy!" he exclaimed vigorously, before bursting into giggles like a child. "someone at work couldn't make it, encouraged me to bunk, actually..."

philip's eyes instantly flashed open as if they were blinding lights being ferociously flicked on, while his cheeks coated themselves in burning red, creating a look of amazement impossible to camouflage. he had never heard anybody even suggest something so provocative, let alone in his direction. he stayed, motionless, in the same position, until the careless crash of the car door opposite him rang through his ears. he quickly noticed that dan had stepped out of the car, and was holding the door open on his side, politely signalling him to follow. philip almost immediately shook himself out of his confused state, and pulled himself out of the seat, only to be greeted with an intoxicatingly mischievous grin.

dan comically bowed, flailing his hand in circles as he crouched to the ground and back again, resembling a ridiculous court jester. his playful smile still stitched in place, he melodramatically rolled his arm out as if he were going to link it with another. philip was apprehensive. dan soon caught onto this, and quickly pulled out another one of his mechanisms in an attempt make him feel at ease. then, his eyes could only be compared to a puppy's; their harsh hazel had suddenly softened into a far less intimidating form, as he stuck his lower lip and began to exaggerate a variety of miserable facial expressions.

philip could feel his lungs clenching as he held his breath, however before too long, he couldn't hold it back for any longer. before he could even begin to think about it, his stomach was in stitches and his throat had closed up. he was laughing.

harder than he ever had before, infact. the wonderful euphoria soared through his entire body, a familiar sensation yet multiplied into the thousands. yes, he had laughed before, but never like this - never truly.

dan, for a moment, looked almost as shocked as phil had previously, yet soon settled into unstoppable stitches alongside him, his cheerful grin wider than it had ever been.
