Calum.
.
Fourth year. Nobody starts in their fourth year. I hate my parents. I hate that they moved me away and refused to tell me. I hate that they changed our names so the letters could never find us, I hate that I know nothing and everyone else in my year has three entire years of knowledge already.
.
This place is magical. It's so eccentric and grand. I'm certain it's the best school in the entire world. A week in however, and I'm starting to wish I was at my old school. I have no friends, and everyone thinks I'm strange because the letters always find you, but they never found me.
.
I've been placed in Huffle puff, we're eating dinner and I'm sulking about knowing nothing when a jelly bean pings the skin just above my eyebrow. I ignore it, presuming it's an honest mistake when two others hit the exact same spot. Snapping my head up, I see a dark haired boy opposite me, grinning cheesily wide.
.
I raise an eyebrow, but I'm smiling too.
"Why the glum face?" He asks, popping a jelly bean into his mouth this time.
.
"I just have a lot to catch up on."
I mumble, swirling my ice cream round and round the bowl.
.
He nods as though he understands, whilst I desperately search my brain for his name. He's in a few of my classes but I just can't put a finger on his name. Cam? Corin? Cameron?
As if he read my mind, he extends out a large Palm. I shake it timidly. It's warm. "Calum." He smiles.
.
"(Y/N)." I release his hand.
.
"Well, (Y/N), how about I tutor you?" He leans across the table slightly as if telling me a mysterious secret.
"I don't mean to brag, but I'm only bottom in one class." He teases and I snort out an unexpected laugh. It makes his smile broader.
.
Nodding a little faster than perhaps acceptable, I mirrored his grin.
"I would love that. Thank you so much."
.
Three months later.
.
Calum and I were practising every night at the moment. We'd quickly grown into brilliant friends and I couldn't be more grateful.
"Expelliarmus." I yelled, flicking my hand the way Calum had taught me.
.
I could feel the heat radiating off his torso onto mine, signalling he was watching. The very meaning of my nerves.
The wand failed to fly from the dummy's hand and I sighed, both embarrassed and frustrated.
.
"Almost." He mumbled, taking a step forward and wrapping his hand around mine. His other Palm rested on my opposite shoulder and everything inside of me lit up like a thousand stars. He rests his chin in the crook of my neck and begins to speak softly of how I should position my wand, but he's making it so difficult to concentrate.
.
He pulls away after showing me the rhythm one last time, and I feel this ache surge through me. It was safe to say I had developed a very large crush on the boy. After some time, I realise he's waiting for me to try again, and so I do.
.
The wand whipped away from the model and I squealed in delight. I did it! I actually did it! In the rush of my excitement, I turn and hug Calum extraordinarily tight. Thankfully he hugs me back, but when I realise what I'm doing, I pull away slowly.
.
He stops me when our faces our inches apart and his eyes search mine for a sign. I don't know what to do so I stare right back, and it seems to be the right thing. His hand travels up to cup my face and he leans in to press his lips against mine. It's slow and gentle to start, but then he kisses me harder and I melt on the spot.
.
When we finally pull apart, both our cheeks are flushed but he smiles through it. "I've been wanting to do that since the day I met you." He mumbled kissing me again..
Luke.
."Go on, (Y/N)." Luke, my best friend, shoved a handful of jelly beans which we had previously purchased at Honeydukes. Some were delicious, though some tasted of vomit and other hideous things.
.
I shook my head, afraid. "No!" I squirmed away from his hand full of sweets. He lurched forward to force one into me, missing his chance as I slipped out of his grasp and ran to the other side of his dorm. He got up in a hurry to chase me, but the loud bellows of male voices outside his door froze both our movements.
.
I wasn't allowed in here. Luke and I had been best friends practically from the day we met. Our first conversation and boom, we were inseparable. We snuck in and out of each others rooms like spy operations, and were yet to be caught. His piercing blue eyes glanced over to me as he gestured underneath his bed.
.
Nodding, I creeped over to slid under, but before I got anywhere, Luke pinned me down onto his bed and shoved a jelly bean in my mouth.
"Ha!" He laughed loudly. "They're from the year above." He chuckled at my confusion.
.
I was about to respond when my senses were struck with this overwhelming taste of mouldy eggs. I gagged instantly, feeling ferociously sick.
Luke laughed harder, a deep belly laugh, as he watched my reaction.
.
Eventually he felt bad and handed me a glass of water. I drunk it rapidly.
"So . . ." Luke began, the way he always did when he wanted something. I eyed him suspiciously. "The Yule ball." He licked his lips carefully. "Are you going with anyone?"
.
I swallowed thickly. I was slightly embarrassed that nobody had asked me, I pretended like I wasn't interested in the dance, but to be totally honest, I wanted nothing more.
"Um, no." I mumbled, my cheeks probably turning a light shade of blossom. "No ones asked." I shrugged.
.
He nodded slowly, running a hand through his hair. "Would you . . .
I mean, would you like to go with me?" He asked, nervously, refusing to meet my eyes as he watched his fiddling feet instead.
.
I smiled a mystified smile. Secretly freaking out because deep down I was that cliché girl who was madly in love with her best friend.
"Yes, I would love to."
.
He snapped his head up in surprise.
"Really?" He grinned, he cheeks still burning. He just looked so . . . happy, I couldn't describe it.
.
"Yeah." I laughed lightly. "Who needs a date."
.
The happiness drained from his face. He physically winces as though I just punched him hard in the gut and I wonder what has just happened.
"Yeah." He mutters, rubbing the back of his neck and looking back at the ground. He baulks before looking back up at me, dead in the eyes.
.
"Actually no." He blurted. "I want you to be my date to the dance, (Y/N). And then my date the night after that, and the night after that." His face was burning but he had confidence in his voice I hadn't seen before.
.
My shocked expression collapsed into a grin. "Thank god for that." He smiled widely, and took a heavy sigh as though a huge weight was just lifted off his shoulders. He nervously laced his fingers with mine, and I squeezed them to show him that this was what I wanted. And then, just like that, his lips crashed onto mine and I couldn't be more excited for tomorrow.
