Chapter 16

After talking to Leticia, we head back to the kitchen and saw all of the guest. Some of them is older and not really familiar to my face. Some are teenagers that goes to my school, including Ethan, Emma, Cindy, Jack, Felix, and my brothers. It's not just us here, there's actually a bunch of people who talks and laugh. It's like a reunion or something. The house is pretty big so I'm really expecting that the party is gonna be huge and a lot of people will come. Then I realize, I have to tell my dad what we just talked about, even if I know that he was listening to our conversation. As I was walking towards my dad, a guy grab my hand and I breath out a big gasp and he holds my lips to keep my mouth shut. When we walk out at the middle of the crowd, I saw Jack who snatches my hand. He's wearing a fancy tux and a shiny slacks with a blue polo underneath and a white bow. He looks like an innocent guy from the movies I've saw. Cindy, Felix, Ethan, Hugo, and Atticus are here with us too.
"Where were you going?" Ethan asked me.
"I was gonna go talk to my dad but Jack grabs me," I said, then I saw Jack laughing. When we heard this loud clinging of glass, the crowd goes silence and we saw the red-headed woman standing at the top of the stairs.
"You look really irresistible, Kezia," Jack whispers to my ear. Then, I feel his eyes eyeing me. I stare at his face and saw his hazel brown eyes at me. I smiled and tell myself to focus at Leticia.
"Tonight, we're celebrating 65th annual ceremony of select students throughout the world. This ceremony promotes every children the chance to go to college without finishing their high school year. If the community governor saw potential on them, they are automatically required to be a college student. Governors saw that this students know that they are capable of doing the task of a college students. But before anything else, Venture community welcomes you," she said and everybody claps.
"So, basically, we're here to exit high school life and be a college students anytime we want," Ethan said and everybody on our squad nod at him, not me. Is this why I'm here at this party? Is this why Leticia talked to me about getting into college by tomorrow?
"As a reminder, folks and the children who's choosing there careers tonight, you are chosen because of your strength and intelligence. If you chose your career, there's no backing up. If you try to quit, there will be a punishment. Nobody knows what the punishment is, but if you'll attempt to quit, you'll see how hard the punishment is. Trust me, you don't wanna see it. And again, the life before us is not like that anymore that if you chose something, you can still quit if you don't want it anymore. Your intelligence is the one that will assist you to your future. Our goal is to have peace and joy in every part of the world," she said. Here she goes again with her favorite phrase, "peace and joy". I remember the last time I was lost in my thoughts of having a peaceful and joyful world. Things changed. I don't really believe that peace and joy does exist anymore.
"Parents are not allowed to tell their children what career they should take. The calling of students and picking of careers will be at 8 in the evening. For now, let's enjoy the day. But before everything else, I would like to call on Kezia Knight," she said, eyeing me from the back of too many crowds. All of them looked at me with a big grin on their faces.
"Kezia Knight is the only girl who solved the hardest math problem, and for that, we thank you for your intelligence," she said. Everybody made a room for me to walk towards the stage. I can't believe that nobody solved that equation before. When I'm already on the stairs, Leticia gave this blue and white medal that glows brightly. "You've done a great job," she said, smiling at me.
"The rest of the day is yours," said Leticia and suddenly, the room is not crowded anymore, leaving me, Leticia, my mom and dad, and my brothers.
"Can I go now?" I asked, then my brothers went towards me.
"So you're the one who solved that math thingy," Hugo said, smiling at me.
"You didn't told me about that!" Atticus said, then I saw Leticia walk away to talk to my parents.
"Uhh, sorry," I said, breathing heavily.
"Let's go outside," Hugo said. I picked up my knit cap and my winter jacket and went outside with them.
