Jimmy Jane
chapter 7 ~ being the bloke
Jane (Jimmy) P.O.V
I have decided something.
I love a man in uniform. Phew when I saw Timmy coming to collect us, all buffed up and rugged in his camouflage greens, I almost wanted to run up to him and kiss every inch of his stubble covered face. Then I remembered:
1. I am pretending to be a guy and
2. He would probably kick me out of his patrol.
All the way back to the hotel I kept sneaking glances at him. He hasn’t aged; in fact he looks more vulnerable, more open. But he seems stronger, the way he speaks with confidence, with order and the way he holds his chin that little higher. War has changed him, like it has changed me, and I haven’t even been here for a day yet.
When we got back to the hotel we met the rest of the patrol. Turns out three of the previous guys were sent home, they finished their tour and we have been sent in to replace them. All together there are seven of us. William, who of which is extremely organized, I mean I stopped by his room and everything in his suitcase was folded and all in order. Not like my room-mate who has been here for three months already, with Timmy. Let’s just say, John really likes to go free and apparently he has a right to hang his undies off the balcony for the whole main street to see. Then there’s Chris, who I haven’t really spoken to much but I get the feeling he thinks he is hot stuff, you know he is from America, he was probably prom king or something. Then Rooming with Chris is Sam, who I must admit, they make a good team. Sam seems to be really free willed like Eddy was. Then left over, Ben and Timmy, who are rooming together. Ben seems like a clumsy guy and looks about my age, but of course is more developed man wise than me.
So that’s our patrol. I better like it because these guys are going to have to put up with me for many months to come.
“Come on Jimmy, snap outta it, are we gonna go get smashed tonight or what?” John calls as he picks up his wallet from the phone stand. Apparently in their spare time, the guys like to party it up, and tonight is my first night in Saigon, so they all want to go out and celebrate the new members of the patrol.
“Yeah, totally, we should hit up some ladies while we are at it,” I grin getting up from the bed and dusting of my jeans and red shirt. Keep going, smile and stay cheeky, manly and strong. Even though I definitely DO NOT want to meet any girls. It’s all an act. A small price to pay, for seeing Timmy.
“Ah, your learning fast, come on my mate” John laughs proudly, as I lock the door. We make our way down the hall to the lobby where the others are waiting. I look at John. HE is definitely good looking. Dark brown hair, cut extremely short to his scalp, and hard set brown eyes. He is tall and buff; definitely swoon worthy if I didn’t love someone else. No one is more attractive than Timmy. Speaking of Timmy if I see him hitting up any girls tonight I will start a war of my own called kill Timmy.
They wait in the lobby, all talking with each other. I spot Timmy straight away. His dark brown T-shirt tucked into his blue jeans, his hair freshly washed, looks darker than the usual light brown and his blue eyes are sparkling. A smile spreads across his face, white teeth sparkling in the dim light that shines from the low lights hanging from above. That’s him, always smiling, even though he is at war.
I walk over and shake hands with all of the boys, smiling and nodding and laughing at their jokes. When I shake Timmy’s hand I notice a silver shine on his left wrist. HE grins at me and we start to walk to some night club Chris told us has free Vietnamese dancers on tonight.
