Our lives have brought us to the end. But in a way we are just beginning. Forever doesn't seem like enough when you have the person who completes you. The promise of 'forever and always' does not seem like it's enough. Our lives together have not reached the end.

20 years later.

“Daddy, your husband is annoying me.” Sawyer, our thirteen year old daughter screamed. She was walking into the kitchen with passion in every step. She looked exactly like me which surprised me every day.

“What’s your dad doing now?” I asked her when she sat down. I felt so lucky to have such a great daughter. She was an easy teenager, but she definitely had her dad’s temper. We discovered that when she turned five.

“Where should I start? He doesn’t want me to have a boyfriend; he wants me to invite him over so he can ‘ask him some questions’. He thinks I’m too young to date and I’m gonna get knocked up at sixteen like Aunt Jamie did.”

She propped off the bar stool and wrapped her arms around my waist. I had to smile every time she did that because while most kids found it uncool, she was one that always did it. Her baby blue eyes met mine.

“I’ll talk to your dad, don’t worry sweetie. But maybe I could meet the boy? Dad would be happy enough with that.” She nodded enthusiastically. I handed her the knife I was using and walked out to the garden.

Noah was sitting in a lawn chair over by our lake. I had learned to spot him out there even when he was hidden. After being married for twenty years it was easier every day to fall in love with the man.

It had not always been easy, but we were strong and rarely fought. At the time it was mostly about our kids, and what we would and wouldn’t let them do. Noah was a lot stricter than I was and even his parents hadn’t been that bad with him, and I would know.

Just like I could see him, he could sense me. Our eyes met when I stepped into the clearing. My beautiful husband looked better with age, his dark hair was still in a tight buzz cut and his body still looked like a teenagers.

“I’m guessing Sawyer ran to you. I don’t like the idea of her dating that boy; Jamie hasn’t had it easy since she had Luke. I don’t want that for our kids, besides that I’m too young to play granddad. Plus she’s too young to date, way too young.”

“She’s only a year younger than I was when you and I started dating. Sawyers a smart girl, she knows her own mind. She’s just like her dad in that sense. Always so sure of herself and knows what she wants.”

Noah smiled at that and he stood up. I was folded into his arms and kissed. After all the years we had been together we could still find time for our relationship. We were one of the only stable couples around.

“Hey you two don’t do that shit in front of the kids you’ll scare them.” Daddy and Chris were walking up to us. The four grandparents had taken out most of our brood. Sawyer chose to stay at home.

“Just because you guys lost your sex lives decades ago doesn’t give you the right to ruin ours. Old men have to worry about breaking hips and all that shit.” Chris stopped and daddy raced forward. He pulled Noah into his arms and squeezed.

“Old men, huh? I thought I had raised you better than that, apparently I was wrong. Maybe we should have traded you for Jesse. Yep, sounds about right.” He looked over to Chris who was now standing beside me.
