Standing in front of me was a girl who looked a lot like me... but wasn't. Her red curls had been tamed into thin waves that fell to her waist. She had on a cream and gold dress that reached her feet which were tucked into perfectly fitted cream heels.
The bodice crushed my ribs and I sucked in my stomach, which before I had never thought needed to be smaller.
My skin was suddenly flawless and the gold in my fiery eyes popped out with the makeup around my eyes. My eyelashes were lengthened and my lips were painted a deep red/orange that matched my hair and eyes perfectly.
"You look so beautiful," chirped Lu, whilst Celine hopped and skipped around me excitedly. Her eyes were sparkling with achievement and determination as she tweaked the position of my hair and pulled my slumped shoulders up.
I felt beautiful. I just didn't feel like me. I wasn't this glamorous, perfect princess that Salamander wanted me to be, I wouldn't be.
Snapping out of my small trance I stepped back and thanked the two girls who had spent all afternoon helping me out. In the excitement of making friends I had forgotten to eat. Eating was now the only thing I looked forward to about having dinner with Salamander and my mother.
I wondered how she was.
Dismissing my two friends I walked out of my room and towards my mothers down the other corridor in the tower. Politely, I knocked before entering, hearing voices and laughter through the door.
I heard my mother answer, shouting, "come in!" in a tone I thought had left her when my dad had. She sounded happy. I felt my brows pull together but as I entered nothing had prepared me for what I saw.
Salamander... my grandad, sat on a sofa with my mum.
As I entered both heads turned my way. A smile that appeared sincere rested upon his face but I kept mine like a mask, turning towards my mother instead. Her eyes were brighter and less red, she looked clean and was dressed in a outfit similar to mine in style but blue. Her face wore a guilty expression, she appeared like a child caught in a naughty act.
"I came to find you," I said, breaking the awkward silence that to my annoyance Salamander had shown no recognition of.
"Well... you found me!" My mother cried, attempting to joke and letting an awkward grin pull the corners of her mouth up.
"I wanted to make sure you were alright. But I can see that your fine... I'm going to go now." I rushed out before turning and angrily walking towards the door.
"Edana," Salamanders voice rang out, a slight smile to his tone. "Why don't you sit with us, you mother was just telling me about you as a baby."
"Thanks... but I'd rather go and eat my own vomit." I snapped back at him, before slamming the door and leaving my mother in a fit of gasps and angry shouts.
I knew my mother wasn't like me but how could she speak to the one person to blame for my fathers death. The man was a killing machine, he may be blood related but he was nothing like me.
I ran down the stairs of the tower and focused my thoughts onto the only person I felt I was able to talk to.
"Abraxas, can we fly?"
I waited a few seconds before asking again. But I'd barely gotten one word out when I heard the familiar sound of large wings on the air.
I ran out into the bailey to find Abraxas standing their proudly.
"Good afternoon Dana, I thought you were having a meal with the king?" Abraxa's voice asked in my head.
"Thats later, and I don't plan on attending," I answered as I climbed onto his back and got a hold of his scales. My carves ached from the long ride we had taken to the castle just last night and I quietly groaned.
