A rush of moving feet descended into a small rectangle shaped opening in the floor. Everything was made of concrete, the walls, the floor. Just the thought of being trapped in a building with a strange man sent worrying thoughts spiraling through their minds. But they had no other choice but to trust him, the way things we're going their friend could be dead within the hour.
Down under the first floor was a massive room filled with many cantankerous items. One of them was a huge cylinder shaped tube running from the ceiling to the floor filled with a liquid which looked like it came from a lava lamp.
"I feel like I'm in one of those sci-fi films from the nineties." Derek whispered, bringing up the rear.
"Place him zhere." The Doc said, gesturing towards a cushioned reclining seat.
Nathan a Derek gently placed Jacob on the horizontal chair and backed away.
Above and around the chair we're a few legitimate looking pieces of equipment in which the Doc was tinkering with.
"Now please, if you would put on zhese goggles, to protect your eyes, we may begin doing tests."
Once the Doc flipped a switch, a buzzing light came on and he began to swipe it back and forth along the length of Jacob's body.
"Hmm, it seems your frend has some sort of..." For a moment he paused. "...irregularity in his brain."
"What??" Teddy questioned.
The Doc, instead of answering his question, took to doing more tests, this time solely focusing on his head.
"Mm, yes. See here." He pointed to a scan that appeared on the screen. "It seems your frend has absolute control over the accessibility of his brain."
There was confused silence for a good five minutes before the Doc explained.
"This man, uhh-"
"Jacob."
"Jacob, has the ability to shut down parts of his brain and only allow what he wants to be used, to be used. By shutting down parts of the brain that are not in use, he enhances his thinking process by... 84%"
Nathan repeated him. "Eighty four..... percent?"
"Yes, your friend, is a genius."
The Doc also muttered something about a seemingly dormant genetic code, but the boys we're to busy casting sideways glances at one another that they didn't hear him.
"Hey," Teddy stepped forward. "Do you think that something could- is it possible that there would be side effects because of this irregularity. Like, would he act strange or abnormal because of it?"
The Doc stood there a moment in deep thought, then adjusted his glasses.
"Yes. I presume that people would act strange when the brain is constantly working in that way. Any odd behavior would be a side effect of brain development. Stress could also be a major player, being that it can cause a suppression in the brain."
"But can you help him?!" Nathan asked, shoving his way to the front. "Can you wake him up?"
"Yes. Wait here."
When the Doc left and the boys were all alone Derek started to talk. "So he's got the disease too."
Nathan glanced at him. "He's one of us. I wonder how long he's been like this."
"A while."
Derek and Nathan looked at Teddy. "What do you mean? You've known??" Nathan sounded ticked.
"You guys never actually went into his room did you?"
"Eh-" The question caught them off guard. "No."
"Hey," Derek butted in. "I don't really trust this Doc dude, so we're kickin' it."
"We can't" Nathan screeched. "Jacob's half dead."
"Not for long."
Derek rushed over to a rusty old sink and ran the water at full force. He stuck his hands under the water and seemed to soak it in like a sponge, gathering the clear liquid around his hand like a bubble. Then he walked over to Jacob.
"There's a first time for everything." He said, then he placed his hands on Jacob's head.
The water rippling around his hands seemed to be absorbed into Jacob's skin. Derek concentrated long and hard, hoping that the Doc wouldn't come marching in. When he lifted his hands he stared at Jacob looking for some sign of life.
For a second they thought they saw him twitch, and were proved right a moment later when his eyes came fluttering open.
"Jacob!" Derek was exuberant. "Your awake, oh my gosh we thought you we're de!-" Derek was cut off when Teddy put him in a headlock and placed a hand over his mouth. "Chill Derek. He's just waking up."
"Ughh..." Jacob had just started to sit up when the Doc returned.
"Ohhhhhh... " The Doc cocked his head. "You're awake."
Suddenly a chill ran down Teddy's spine.
"Ello son. How do you feel?"
Jacob sat there holding the back of his head and squinting his eyes. "Who are you?" He asked in distaste.
"I'm Doc." The man was smiling like a child on Christmas, which only make Teddy feel more uneasy.
"You are a very special person Jacob. You are very smart."
"Ya."
The Doc was still grinning. "I think I would like to dissect you."
Jacob shot his eyes open. "What?"
Before Jacob could see it, he had a loaded gun resting between his eyes. Derek and Nathan both stammered backwards, but Teddy grabbed Jacob's arm and pulled him to his feet.
Slowly the gun swept in an arc, keeping itself trained on Jacob.
The Doc's eyes were lit with fire. "I do not have time to deal with children. Hand him over."◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆
