Tainted Water

Jacob almost had a heart attack when a resonating sound echoed through the building. For a moment his heart stopped, but he took a shaky breath and headed for a door on the far wall. He peered around the corner and found nothing but darkness, illuminated by faint red lights.

The place was quiet. He pressed his hand against the wall and travelled through the building, heading down a rather wide hallway. He couldn't see a thing. If only he had night vision.

Why we're the lights off?  Suddenly he stepped in something. He ripped his leg out of the water with so much fear he went tumbling onto the concrete. The floor sloped downward into standing water.

He really had nowhere else to go, so he started to wade through the unseen murk. At first the pool was shallow, but rose further and further up his leg until he was almost waist deep.

He sloshed around in the liquid, wondering why the heck the building hadn't sunk into the lake yet if the ground floor was flooded. He groped around trying to find an emergency light switch. Finally he found one and turned it on.

The liquid was tainted with a dark color. Blood, swirling in it like wisps of cloud. Floating in the water was a man laying face down, still and silent.

Jacob slowly reached out towards the body and flipped it over. It was the Doc, the man who tried to kill him, with shards of glass sticking out of his chest and another that had pierced his throat.

Jacob drew his hand away and stared at the blood on his hands. He glanced up and saw the smeared and dripping pictures lining the white walls. Pictures of cats, and butterflies, and a dead eyed creature that gave him shivers.

"N-Nathan?" The only sound heard was the sloshing of water and tinkling of floating glass jars.

Teddy slipped through the ice cold wall and stood in silence for a couple minutes until he thought the water had settled. He stuck his head through the wall and caught a glimpse of Derek. The man was soaking wet and he reeked of some sort of chemical.

"Hey man. Psst! Derek." Derek suddenly furrowed his brow and looked down the hall. "Over here." Derek jerked around and faced the other direction. "Here Derek, here."

Finally the man caught of glimpse of Teddy, his face sticking out of the wall like a deer head. "Teddy!" Derek almost cursed but held it back with his hand. "The heck man. What are you doing."

Teddy brought the rest of his body into the room and stood before his friend. "Me? What have you been doing?"

"The Doc. He took Nathan." Derek's face started to fall. "I don't know—what happened to him."

Teddy looked slightly incredulous and turned around to stare at Derek. "Then what are you standing around for."

He ducked and slipped under a branch, continuing to keep pace with his own heartbeat. He wasn't running but was swiftly moving through the brush.

A taller man with more build was following close behind. He had a fairly new knife strapped to his leg and kept glancing behind him. "What does it look like?"

The front man spoke. "Stocky. Wrinkly. Walks on all fours. Not a pretty sight to see."

"How close?"

The front man spoke again. "Uncomfortably close." Solomon vaulted over a fallen tree and swiftly unsheathed his machete.

Josh was spiking with electricity, little shocks of violet light on his fingertips. The monster had him anxious.

"It's stalking us." Solomon picked up the pace. "It knows you'll tire out at some point. He's waiting for that moment."

"Very gentlemanly of him." Josh turned towards his brother. "If he gets the chip. What will he do with it."

Solomon shrugged. "Most likely eat it. Then kill us."

Josh looked completely done with the situation. "Great."
