"Hey do you know where Nathan and Derek are?"
"Why are you asking me?"
"Because I thought you might know." Teddy sighed turning away from Jacob. "You're so stubborn."
"What's that?"
"Forget it, I'll find them myself."
"They're upstairs." Jacob said, going back to scrubbing the grill rack.
"I just checked upstairs."
"Well, they're up there."
"Where?"
"In the closet."
Teddy had an incredulous look on his face. "What- what are you talking about??"
"Yanno.. the big walk-in closet."
"Do you know why?"
"Secret society something or another."++
Earlier that day, at the other end of the cabin from where Teddy and Jacob resided, Derek had entered the hallway. He didn't even have a second to react before a hand came out of the closet and closed around his mouth. Instinct told him to wrestle with whoever it was who held him captive, but at the sight of Nathan he had managed to calm himself.
"Mmph."
"Shh don't speak."
Derek stared at Nathan in a sort of judgmental confusion but Nathan just stood there, his hand still over Derek's mouth.
Nathan's ears were perked. He was intently listening to something on the other side of the door. Soon they both heard the faint sound of footsteps growing ever closer. Suddenly they stopped in front of the closet door.
"Guys?" It was Teddy.
They waited until Teddy had went back down stairs before they relaxed.
"Mmph-" Derek wrenched Nathan's hand away. "Hey, what's with the crazy antics." Derek only stared at his friends face for a few seconds before he understood. "Oh.."
"When did you realize what had happened?"
"Heh.." Derek laughed slightly while rubbing his head with his head. "I suppose it was when I was sitting at the bottom of a lake. An odd experience. Waking up in the water."
"So you can..?"
"Yes. Yes. I can breath under water."
Nathan reacted by throwing his hands up and turning to face the wall, burying his face in the clothes.
"Nate?"
Nathan turned back around and faced Derek. "It's all just a little much. You don't exactly expect for you and your friend to get superpowers all of a sudden. Nevertheless think that that same friend may have even died."
At that last sentence Derek grew a little tense. "I think I did."
Nathan looked at him.
"I think I did die. All I remember is blacking out when the water was over my head and then waking up at the lake. Like a whole day from my memory is missing."
They stood in complete silence for a moment.
"Sorry-"
"Don't. Don't say sorry. It's what happened. I'm fine, I can talk about it." Derek said, putting his hand up. "What about you though? Has anything happened with your telekinesis lately?"
Nathan furrowed his brow. "That is what It's called isn't it? And no, nothing really. I did accidentally shut a door without getting off the couch though. Teddy thought it was the wind." Nathan started snickering at the thought.
"You have to be more careful." Derek reminded him.
"Ya, I know. I had a slight panic attack when that happened. But now It's my turn to ask questions."
Derek crossed his arms. "Ok. Shoot."
"Jacob.. Could he....?"
"I don't know."++
Like a lion it roared through the night. A mighty rushing wind that brought with it the cold and forbidden whispers. Shoving the trees out of the way and chilling the hearts of innocent passersby. Josh trudged through this as he climbed the driveway to the cabin door. With a slow creaking and a hard thud, the heavy oak door swung open.
The chatter inside had suddenly stopped.
"Josh!" Jacob basically skipped over to his brother. "How was ever... ry...." Jacob halted. His brother seemed stressed in a way he had never been before. Josh's eyelids were heavy and used the doorpost to keep himself balanced. He looked exhausted.
"Here, let me take your napsack." Jacob said in an peaceful tone.
Josh took off the heavy bag and handed it to his brother while simultaneously shutting the door behind him, which closed with a deafening chink.
Josh's gloomy face suddenly broke into a boyish grin, but just as quickly it faded away. Without say a word he marched down the hallway and came back carrying a VCR player. And when one of the boys said he was going to go to the bathroom, Josh sternly called them by name and said just a single word. "Sit." While pointing towards the couch.
You need to see something. He thought to himself while hooking up the machine.
The others sat still in a row on the couch, for they didn't exactly know how to react to Josh's strange behavior. Jacob tapped his fingers to the beat of an unseen drum while Derek stared at him, trying to figure out what could possibly be going on inside his mind.
Teddy and Nathan though, kept their eyes fixed on Josh. Every time the machine clicked and shifted, Teddy about jumped out of his seat. Then came that sudden feeling again, but this time only Teddy felt it. An odd sensation that made his skin crawl. "Ok." His eyes were suddenly torn from the window. Finally, Josh was ready to show them what he saw. Or so he thought.
Josh was about to push the button when a deep rooted fear rose up inside him, making it a little less manageable to breath. He had shoved the ever growing fear to the depths of his mind before he got there. But it was flooding back to him. Piece by everloving piece. Ultimately.. he clicked the button.++
The TV buzzed a crackled for minutes before the video synched with the machine. Vvvvvvv.. click.
It appeared to be a home video, for what they currently saw was a pair of hands positioning the camera. The lighting was bad and the figure which went to sit on the couch across from the camera was shadowed. The man's hair, black and long, went well with the shabby clothes he wore.
The boys didn't understand what this was supposed to be.
The man tried to speak but as soon as he tried, fell victim to a horrid, hacking cough which shook his entire frame. The room in which he resided had a feasible amount of furniture but really disgusted you in appearance.
The wallpaper was almost completely stripped away and the carpet was stained with huge blotches of black filth which could have easily been mistaken for blood. But what really caught the eye of the viewers was the silver machete which lay out across the coffee table.
"Before I go any deeper into this, just let me say... I- I'm sorry."Time seemed to have stopped at the sound of the man's voice. The tension in the room rose high above what would be said as sane. "What- "
"Shut up."
Nathan silenced himself at the sharp rebuke of Josh, who had a face like steel. The man in the TV, who had come to be known as Solomon. Placed his head in his hand before continuing to speak.
"I am I- I need to warn you of something. Something that's bigger than all of us." Solomon lifted his head up. "I don't know everything, but I know the visions have to do something with the laboratory- "
Abruptly the flowing words halted. Solomon gripped the machete and shot his head around behind him. The sudden silence on the tv and in the cabin were so deafening that you could hear a pin drop.
It was just barely audible, but you could just make out the words. "It knows I'm here."
Solomon whipped his head back around. "Now listen to me. I'm pretty sure It's in the trees. What I'm saying is don't breath it in. It's toxic. And so is the water."
Suddenly they heard a gut wrenching crash which sounded like wood being ripped apart. Without warning Solomon grabbed the camera along with his things and started running. Bursting through the door with alarming force. They watched the shaking image of running feet until the camera shut off and the screen went fuzzy.°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
