If you want to learn the true meaning of "bad to the bone" firsthand, then look no further than The Vampire Diaries'. These manipulative-yet-irresistible scoundrels are your best source of all things wicked. With their diabolical plans, unyielding wit, and somewhat serial killer tendencies you will almost always meet your doom upon crossing one of their paths. Whether they treat you like a mere snack or compel you to be their messenger, you will certainly find yourself in a world of pain and trouble.

That being said, which TVD's mischievous supernatural creatures has struck the most fear in our hearts? Without further ado, here is a full breakdown of the show's top sixteen villains, ranked by level of mercilessness and destructiveness.

16. Kol Mikaelson

Kol Mikaelson was one of the Original siblings we loved to drool over, but when he set out to kill Jeremy Gilbert in Season 4 in order to prevent him from completing the map to the cure to vampirism, we were like: "Hold on, bro. We definitely don't like you anymore." Honestly, if Kol had succeeded with his plan, we would never have gotten the opportunity to watch Jer Bear tear apart his plain white t-shirt to reveal the beautiful muscles hidden beneath it. How cruel is that?

15. Isobel Flemming :

TVD has some of the worse parental figures on television and Isobel, Elena's birth mother, is absolutely on that list. After faking her death and leaving her husband, Alaric, to become sired by Damon, she returned to Mystic Falls with her humanity switch turned all the way off and a mission to get the moonstone from her not-so-beloved daughter and settle debts with frenemies. From compelling people to jump in front of cars to her own untimely (actually pretty timely) death at the end of the first season, Isobel showed her claws and we were happy to see her meet a fiery demise.

14. Elijah Mikaelson :

Before he charmed the pants off of us and proved to be one of the most honorable, best-dressed men we've ever had the privilege of meeting, Elijah was the FIRST Original vampire we met on TVD and he truly terrified us. With a quiet confidence and a sinister smile, he vowed to take on anyone threatening the life of his brother, Klaus. His mission back in season 2 was to deliver the doppelganger by any means necessary and we were petrified of what would happen to our kidnapped Elena.

13. Esther Mikaelson :

At first, Esther seemed to be a caring mother who simply wanted to reunite all her children and catch up with them. In actuality though, she wanted to kill what the monsters she had created (out of fear of being caught in a web of lies and adultery). Not only did she recruit one of her sons in her dangerous schemes, but she also forced Alaric's hand by turning him into a vampire-killing machine and getting him murdered in the process. Mother of the year award, this one....

12. Markos and the Travelers :

Although we never really got know this fellow, we did learn that he had immense magical power. Not only did the Travelers stir up major trouble by hijacking innocent bodies around town - including poor Matty Blue Blue's - but they are essentially responsible for getting Damon stuck in a 1994 prison hellhole. Why? Because the only reason he had to be placed there by Grams and her witchy friends in the place first was because he got stuck on the Other Side saving Stefan, whose heart a Traveler with tremendous rage issues had tore out (literally) from his chest at the end of episode 5×21. And in case this wasn't enough, the group's charismatic leader cast an anti-magic border over Mystic Falls in an attempt to eliminate the town of vampires and hybrids and he insisted on controlling - and eventually killing off - the doppelgangers. Though he was far from formidable (at this point, we'd seen worse), he did manage to give Stefan and Elena super boring dreams of them cooking and raising children together (has he never read any TVD fan fiction? seriously) so that was pretty sketchy.
