The Marauders' dormitory looked like a war zone. Clothes were strewn across every surface, the curtains were drawn so tightly it felt like midnight, and the air smelled faintly of socks and food stolen from the kitchens the other night.
Remus was already up, fully dressed, and regretting his life choices. He stood in the middle of the room, arms crossed, staring at the human disaster that was his best friends. James was starfished across his mattress, snoring with one sock hanging off his foot. Sirius was tangled in his duvet like it had tried to fight him in the night. Peter was just a vague lump beneath three blankets and what might've been someone's robe.
"Wake up," Remus said, not for the first time.
Nothing.
He cleared his throat. "Seriously, wake up."
A groan. A snore. Possibly a randomly spoken word.
Remus rolled his eyes, pulled out his wand, and said casually, "Sonorus. WAKE. UP. NOW."
The results were immediate and dramatic. James flailed so hard he punched his pillow. "QUIDDITCH? NO? WHAT—"
"Who died?!" Sirius sat bolt upright, hair like an explosion.
Peter screamed and yanked the blanket over his face. "Don't let it eat me!"
"Glad to see you're all emotionally stable," Remus sighed and dropped the spell.
James blinked blearily. "Mate, it's barely morning."
"It's 7:15."
"In the AM?!" Sirius looked horrified. "What kind of monster are you?"
Remus didn't answer. He just said, more seriously, "Evita Rosier knows. About me. About all of us."
That woke them up faster than a cold shower.
Sirius flopped backwards onto his bed and groaned. "Oh, perfect. Absolutely perfect. The girl who looks like she'd hex a kitten for blinking too loudly knows."
"How?" James asked, rubbing his eyes.
"She caught me coming out of the hospital wing with the Wolfsbane. Followed me. Asked questions. Got the whole picture. Very Slytherin of her."
Peter sat up, wide-eyed. "Did she try to blackmail you? Is this the part where she demands we clean her cauldron every day for a year?"
"No," Remus said. "She actually... listened. She said she'd keep the secret. For now."
Sirius narrowed his eyes. "What's her angle? Slytherins always have an angle."
"I don't know," Remus admitted. "But she didn't tell anyone."
"D'you really think she'll keep her mouth shut? She's a Rosier, for crying out loud. That family throws people under the Knight Bus for sport." Peter squirmed in his blankets, peeking out with bleary eyes.
