I glanced up at Jake upon hearing the voice. He was turned in the direction that his father had spoken from.
I turned in my seat to see the doorway where a tall, handsome man was waking through.
He walked to his wife and pecked her on the cheek before taking a seat in his chair.
"The food smells as delicious as always, Honey." Jake's dad looked up after stating this and glanced at me.... Then he took a second look like he just noticed me. "And who is this?"
Before I could introduce myself, Kim spoke up. "This is Lacey. She's a friend of Jake. Lacey, this is Tyler." Yeah, like I didn't already notice that when you yelled his name across the house.
"Hi. It's nice to meet you." I tell him.
He nods his head in acknowledgment. "Ditto." He looked at Jake. "Son, it's the first day of school and you are already bringing girls home? Savage." He then faced Kim. "This is going to be a long year for all of us, Kimmy. Prepare yourself."
The whole table burst into giggles. Behind my laughing face I was thinking: is this a common thing for him to bring girls home???
This jealousy has to stop.
"Dad!" Jake exclaimed while his entire face turned deep red. His blush is do cute!
"Sorry, Jake. So, how was everyone's day?" His apology was no where near convincing considering he was trying not to laugh. His subject change wasn't subtle either.
Everyone was just about to start talking about their day when Tommy beat them all to it.
"Oh yeah! Dad, guess what! Today, James wanted to cut off some of Grace's hair but I told him no but he didn't listen and he did it anyways. It's crazy! He cut off like 2 inches! But he got into a lot of trouble by the teacher, then the principal, and then they called his mom!" Wow, Tommy said all that in what sounded like one breath...... Did he breathe at all??
"Really?" His dad asked in disbelief.
"Yeah, Dad. I told him not to, but he just didn't want to listen." He shook his head and looked down in disappointment for his friend.
"Tommy, I don't think that this James is someone I want you to be friends with." Kim said.
"But Mom!"
Tyler turned towards his wife. "Darling, they are kids. And listen. Tommy knew better and tried to tell him not to. We should be proud that he didn't try to copy the mistake of one of his friends."
"Yeah, I know. It's just that if they do something to get him in trouble I will hurt a kid." She said in a very scary tone.
Tyler laughed, "Yes. We all remember what happened when you went to have a conversation with the kid that said a few words to Jake." Jake ducked his head down in embarrassment.
Kim looked very guilty after Tyler mentioned this. "I don't care. He shouldn't have tried to mess with my pumpkin. Next he'll think twice before he tries to harass my son again and then maybe he won't end up with a broken arm." She stated defiantly.
Tyler shook his head. "I have to watch out for you. And you were so convincing when you made up that lie that he fell off his skateboard."
"Ha! He tried to tell them, but I was too good and no one believed that I would actually break a kid's arm."
I looked around the table. Was anyone else not terrified? I admired their relationship with each other and their kids, but I'm really not fond of Kim's motherly fury.
What have I gotten myself into.
After that conversation everything else started to get calmer and we all had a nice meal with no more confessions.
Once we were done and I helped clean the table off, Jake led me to the door. "Thanks for the dinner. Your mom is a really good cook." I said awkwardly.
"No problem. The whole family will probably aggravate me every single day and ask when you are coming again."
"Ha! Sorry. I'll see you at school tomorrow?"
"Yeah. Goodnight Lacey." Jake stopped right when the path for the walkway stopped and he felt the grass under his shoes.
"Goodnight Jake."
I got in my car and pulled out of his driveway.
Off to see another empty house and to spend a night all alone.
