"We didn't have any problems before they arrived, I say we throw them out!" Madelina's ears rang with the sound of the townspeople agreeing.
"This isn't good." She whispered to Phoenix, but the blonde only narrowed her eyes at their accusers.
"What the fuck is going on?" An all too familiar voice demanded from behind the duo. Madelina decided that it wasn't worth the energy to turn around and answer the assassin.
"Ya'll been stealing our possessions and we refuse to stand for it." A citizen responded and crossed his arms in an attempt to look intimidating. Madelina wanted to snort in his face.
"What proof do you have that it was us?" Arro snapped and walked up to stand next to the two accused with Guertena following close behind. Madelina found herself wishing that her own little Filos wasn't nocturnal, the only time they could ever really be together was if she stayed up late. Her beliefs of keeping her sleeping schedule on time with the sun kept her away from her best friend and it tore her apart inside.
"We don't need no damned proof to kick strangers out of our home!" A woman exclaimed.
"Woah woah woah," another familiar voice joined the conversation "What's going on here?" Madelina wanted to scream at the Vlivian boy to just fuck off and stay out of it, introducing the prince into this mess could only spell trouble.
How idiotic can one boy be.
"We're getting kicked out." Phoenix replied coldly, refusing to take her gaze off of the crowd.
"What? You can't kick me out, I'm the-" Madelina tapped her beasts power to shut his mouth for him. You bloody fucking idiot.
She saw the boy glare at her angrily, but luckily he didn't seem to be in the mood to struggle.
"He's the what?" Some dolt piped up.
"No one." Madelina growled through gritted teeth and released the prince's mouth, hoping that he got the message to stay quiet.
"Wait, don't that boy seem familiar?" Another citizen inquired.
"Yes... That white hair ain't natural."
Madelina could sense Phoenix tensing up right beside her How many freaking things can go wrong in one day. She found herself thinking.
"You're right," Madelina said desperately, "we ought to be on our way anyway. I thank you for your hospitality and-"
"He's a bloody Vlivian!" Someone shouted suddenly.
Fuck.
All the other townsfolk picked up on the new accusation.
"You're the reason that we're starving!"
"Where's the game, your highness?"
"Why aren't you doing anything?"
Madelina swiveled her head to glare at the boy. For once in his life, he actually looked confused and maybe... scared?
"Get out of our town!" Some man screeched and came barreling out of the crowd with a shabby looking sword raised in his hand.
"Woah woah hey look I don't want to hurt you!" Lucius exclaimed and drew his own sword from his back. The sight the blundering weapon seemed to sway the man, but he continued his charge none-the-less and brought his sword down on the prince.
The boy's confused expression immediately changed to that of hatred as he blocked the attack easily and parried with a snarl.
No no no no no. Madelina started to panic. This shouldn't be happening.
Time seemed to slow as the fight continued on, the sound of steel hitting steel screamed through her ears. The townspeople roared in encouragement for the unnamed man to succeed. For once in her life, Madelina was lost. She found herself looking around in disbelief at the scene, turning her head this way and that until her eyes rested on where Arro had once been, but who had seemingly disappeared. Her gaze fell on her leader, watching as Phoenix twitched and muttered, something Madelina had seen very rarely. She has no idea what to do. The black haired girl realized with a start.
Suddenly a bang! echoed back to her and she quickly turned back to the swordplay, but it seemed no different then it had been before. Out of the corner of her eye she saw that the inn door was wide open, something that was new. When she shifted her gaze to it properly, she could see Arro standing in the doorway with one foot in front of the other and her bowstring pulled back to her cheek with an arrow fitted in the notch.
She saw the scarred girl aim for no more than a second before the shaft was sent spiraling towards the sword fight, followed by a terrifying howl that the strange man emitted. As he fell onto the knee that wasn't housing an arrow, Lucius took the opportunity without even thinking first.
You bloody IDIOT.
In one quick movement, Lucius had separated the man's head from his shoulders.
And that's when all hell broke loose.
The townsfolk screamed in disbelief and those that had weapons on them (which turned out to be the majority) streaked forward to attack without a second thought.
Madelina barely avoided a dagger that was swung at her as she brandished her staff and slammed her attacker's skull with her newly carved stick sending the man sprawling backwards. She heard the snarling of a fox and the drumming of a woodpecker as the beasts fought to protect their masters. Madelina didn't bother waking up Filos to help with the petty squabble, and so continued to duck and weave around people as she slammed her staff into this person and that person.
She gritted her teeth as someone managed to scratch her arm with their dirk. That someone didn't boast about if for long as she battered his skull over and over and over again with the butt of her stick until she was sure that he wouldn't be getting back up any time soon. With eyes threatening to well up with tears alongside the searing pain in her left arm, she searched around for her next victim. Before she could set on one person, a loud howl erupted from the direction of the inn.
She immediately froze in place. That howl was unmistakable.
Screams filled the air as she turned around and found Resa baring her teeth at everyone, saliva dripped down her mouth as she growled and leapt forward.
Those who had sense ran away. Those who ended up in Resa's path weren't so lucky. Madelina stood there and watched as the dirt turned red with the blood of their accusers. Even Phoenix had been frozen in place at the sight of the pure ferocity that the big white wolf held. The beast wasted in no time in slaughtering the townsfolk that had remained.
The town became eerily silent as the last scream finally died out underneath Resa's claws.
