Chapter VII: Discovering Disguises

~ JAKE ~

Her voice is like melody in my ears, like it was stuck in my mind years ago. It was the same sound I hear every Sunday afternoon. My Lexa.

The way her feet move were copying another girl's motion. Those countless times where she hangs her hair under her ears with her delicate hands, the eyes look innocent like the dancing daisies in a prairie, those moments where she tilts her head to the right when she's curious about something, and those minutes of twiddling and playing with her fingers whenever she's worried. They were all the same as Jane's movements from last night.

And that hair. That orange mint hair. The only difference from Jane is her hairstyle. Alex always fastens her strands into a bun.

     Those green eyes.

Jane also have one. Are they twins? But she told me that they're friends. Weird.

I tried to ask Alex about Jane and the first thing she said was asking me who she is.

     Now it's getting suspicious.

"She already left two hours earlier. Her mother was getting worried."

Her voice were as smooth as silk. She always reminds me of Lexa. Both of them are sweet like the chocolate pudding I eat every night. I feel like talking to Lexa.

     Every chuckle. Every breath.

Then she invited me to hang out with her to the bookstore.

I'd answer a 'yes' if I don't have a scheduled meeting with the daughter of Mr. Wilson. My parent's should've paid for homeschooling instead. Sometimes, I just don't understand them.

"Sorry, I have an appointment. But we'll chat about everything tonight. I'm actually running late. I'll be going."

I've got this feeling that she is Lexa. But almost ninety percent of me is doubting about it.

     "Bye, Lexa."

Holy frappucino. I just called her Lexa.

You're so stupid, Jake. That's Alex. Stop daydreaming."

     "Whoops. Sorry, Alex."

She just nodded, looking eased. Her shoulders were now rested down as she let out a huge breath from her nose.

~ ALEX ~

He stood up from his chair and strutted to the main doors. My eyes were still placed at the seat where Jake once was.

That was close. I thought the end was approaching me. But I know someday it will. Someday I'll reveal myself as Lexa, telling every secret that I've been hiding and the real reason why I've chosen to disguise my identity.

Hold those thoughts. How did he know about me? About Lexa?

I might ask that about him later.

     "Are you ready, Miss Perkins?"

     "At lunchtime, Mr. Robinson."

-around two thirty in the afternoon-

I was chewing on a piece of bubblegum as I scrolled my view through a pile of books.

     Pop!
