Chapter XXV: Truths Can't Stay Hidden
~ ALEX ~
"Alex," Hannah gazed around the hall with anxiety, "why are they looking at us?" My back was against her back and I was facing my opened locker, settling all the books in my bag. Her voice sounds scared and it rang a bell to me, so I turned around and walked to Hannah's side. The hall was surrounded with college students staring at my figure with an indescribable hunger, most of them were from my broadcasting class.
They were getting closer, inch by inch. Their eyes were wide in amazement and perplexity, with notebooks, papers, and pens on their hands. Hannah tilted her head to me and whispered, "If I told you to run, you run as fast as your legs can take you, okay?"
"Mhmm." I nodded slowly.
Maria Thompson-Perez stepped towards with a widening eyes and lifted up a poster of Lexa and a pen on my face. "Everyone! It's Lexa!" I covered my ears as they began screaming.
"Run!" Hannah grabbed my hand and lead me to the second floor. We were running as swift as we could to make it to the top of the stairs. When we finally made it, she looked to the left and to the right, deciding carefully where to head next. "Han, to the right."
We went through the empty corridor and passed by the laboraties. I dared myself to look behind and saw the growing crowd chasing us with only a few meters of distance. "They're getting closer." I sang. "Don't state the obvious, Al."
After we turned a corner, I felt an arm grabbing me towards a dark room. I kept hold of Hannah so we wouldn't get separated. We were both thrown into the room, which I figured is the maintainance's. I was laying on something wet and damp, like a girl's hair that just came from a long shower. It was dark and I couldn't see easily. I felt it from my back and picked it up. When someone switched on the lights, I exhaled sharply.
I was holding a wet mop. "Disgusting." Hannah mentioned. I looked up and saw the guy who brought me inside.
"Oh, it's just Paul."
Hannah squealed his name and I thought we were almost heard by the people chasing us outside. They hugged each other for a long minute, trying to savor the little moment they have. I didn't want to interrupt. I picked myself up from the greasy wet floor and looked around. I was pretty sure we really are in the janitor's closet. It was tiny and snug, I couldn't move too much from the little space I have. Four walls, with shelves hanging onto them.
Then I looked back to the small window the door has. The halls are empty and quiet. Maybe they already ran past. "We don't have much time." Paul almost startled me. "They're going to come back."
I scoffed. "Well, it's not like we're going out there and run for our lives again, right?" There was a terrible silence between us and a grin across my face. Hannah and Paul stared at each other with a knowing glance. Then they stared back at me.
My grin was wiped off my face. "You have gotta be kidding me."
The next thing I know we were sprinting our way towards the exit. There are no signs of the crazy crowd. Paul was running two feet ahead of us and he slammed the doors open, only to find out that we're trapped by the paparazzis waiting right outside.
I soon stepped out, with a rush of surprise passing across my face. Hannah and Paul went down the steps and I was left at the top of the stairs, motionless and fixed. I couldn't move. I was too stunned by the lights striking me for the hundredth time.
"Lexa!"
"How do you feel now that you're known to everyone in America?"
"What's the next big project coming up?"
