I gulped and shook as the wolf wore a sly smirk, or something along those lines. I felt like I was frozen in place and no matter how much I tried to scream or run, I just couldn't. I was going to die...this wolf was going to kill me, and nothing can prevent that. Just then there was something that cut the air next to my head and hit the wolf in the shoulder. I saw it was an arrow before the wolf howled and whimpered a bit before taking a charging stance,
"Get down Celine!" I heard Jake yell behind me, but I couldn't process the words fast enough as the wolf lunged for me. A small noise left my mouth and turned into a blood curdling cry as the wolf tackled me to the ground. My ankle twisted in a way it never should and I cried out. Another voice was rising from behind me but I couldn't see who it was, but something was telling me it was Jem,
"No!" I blinked once before I felt agonizing pain in my right shoulder and felt warm liquid coat my arm and chest. I screamed as loud as I could and then there was a heavy wait on me. The wolf went limp and was laying sprawled out ontop of me with an arrow where it's right eye should be. The beast was pushed off me and I finally got to look at my shoulder, and what I saw made me wish I hadn't. My skin was torn, ripped and stained. Blood oozed from the gash and I immediatly started crying out. Jem and Jake were by my side in no time,
"Shit, we have to get her to Rhonda, she'll know what to do," Jake said trying to sound calm but even with the darkness threatening to take me away I heard the utter fear in his voice,
"Jeremy!" Jem yelled out and his voice echoed off the trees. Jeremy ran up and his eyes doubled in size before he turned and I heard him throwing up,
"Jem...am I...going to die?" I winced with every word but I'm sure Jem heard. He sat down next to me and brought my head in his lap,
"No, you're going to stay with me okay? Right here with me where you belong," I didn't have the strength to question him so I just looked up into his blue eyes that were slowly filling with tears. At first I had no idea why he would cry, but then my vision blurred, and soon I wasn't laying on the ground with my head in his lap...I was laying in complete nothingness.
I woke up to a beeping sound and the smell of bleach, this means one thing...I'm in the hospital. I opned my eyes slowly but surely and let them adjust to the bright white lights that were right above my head. I then looked aorund the room to see a figure sitting by the window. I struggled for a second to see who it was but then my stomach did flips and I knew it was him,
"Jem," I croaked out and the figure instantly sat up and raced toward the bed, it was indeed Jem, but he looked extremely tired yet relieved,
"Hey." he breathed as he sat on the chair next to the stiff bed,
"Hey," I said back in a voice that was quiet yet ruff and he smiled before handing me a cup of water. I took it with my own smile and finished it in one breath, "How long have I been here?" He shrugged,
"A week," I sat up quickly but winced and crashed back to the bed,
"A week?!" He nodded,
"You lost a lot of blood Celine and you needed the rest," My heart tightened when he said my name and he smirked as if knowing what I was feeling toward him which only made me blush, but then the images of what happen flooded my head,
"That wolf...was it the same wolf that attacked the others?" His smile slipped and he looked at his hands like they were objects he's never seen before,
"No, it wasn't the same one, but it's dead now and you aren't. That's the important part," I shook my head,
"But those two people didn't make it-"
"That's not something you should be thinking about right now dearest, I think I should call Jake and Cynthia, they're in the cafetria right now," I nodded,
"Where's Jeremy?"
"In school," He pulled out his phone and dialed a number and put it to his ear, "Yes...she's awake...I know...I wouldn't do that, not right now at least, but you must understand it has to be done...it's a little too late for that...you will explain it then...fine," And he hung up with a sigh,
"What was that about?" He looked at me as if realizing I was still sitting there and smiled gently at me,
"Nothing, unfortunately lunch is almost over so i need to get going, but I'll be back as soon as school is out," I sat up a little and felt the pain in my shoulder increase. He walked up to me and lightly pushed me back down, "Rest, Jake and Cynthia are on their way up,when I come back I'm bringing Jeremy and the twins, so you'll definitley need your rest then," I laughed but winced shortly after,
"Not to sound rude Jem but why are you here?" He looked shocked by the question but quickly covered it with a smirk,
"I'm not," And he slipped out of the room, Jake and Cynthia taking his place. They didn't look any better than he did. They were pale and had dark bags under their eyes,
"Oh goodness," Cynthia sighed as she raced to the bed and engulfed me in a hug. I winced as her shoulder met with my right one and she threw herself back, "Oh I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," I tried smiling reassuringly at her but it must have shown I was still in pain, because she nodded and walked toward the door, "I'll get Rhonda," Jake on the other hand just stood there staring at the tile floor, then to a seat at the edge of the bed. He rested his hand on my leg and gave it a gentle squeeze,
"Jake...you're acting as if I've died," He looked up and I saw that while they were waiting for me to wake, there must have been the question of whether I actually was going to wake up or not, "I'm sorry," He stood and walked to my left and sat on the bed next to me. He wraped his arms around me, avoiding my shoulder, and held me close,
"Honestly Celine, for awhile we thought you were," I stayed quiet and he continued to hold me, "For the past six months I have become attached to you," he chuckled, "Okay, that didn't come out right," I smiled and nodded in agreement,"I meant...I know it may be hard to see us as parents but you have become a daughter to us, and a sister to Chase. When that wolf tackled you, my heart stopped and I couldn't do anything, I couldn't even think straight-"
"You did though, you pulled through and shot it again," His head shook sadly but he held a smile,
"No, I couldn't do it, so Jem took the bow from me and shot the wolf, but it still bit you," I swallowed,
"Oh," was all I was able to say...Jem saved my life, and I asked him why hewas here, now I releazied how rude it must have sounded...great.
