The following months are just as sweet. John transfers schools so Sherlock will never have to face bullies alone. Sherlock solves a great number of cases slowly earning him the trust of Scotland Yard. All is well and it is seemingly improved by Mycroft making a surprise visit just before Sherlock's fourteenth birthday. When he arrives Sherlock standa frozen in shock the suddenly he races towards his brother and engulfs him in a hug. Mycroft smiles politely but does not return Sherlock's affection. Sherlock helps Mycroft carry his suitcase up to his old room and asked if he had any more luggage. Mycroft shakes his head stating that he would only be staying for two days. That night after another silent family dinner Mycroft knocks on the door to Sherlock's room. "Come in." Sherlock says looking up from an experiment. Mycroft strides into the room and sits down on the bed and steeples his fingers looking cynically down at Sherlock. Finally after a long silence he says. "Brother mine, I know about you and John." Sherlock drops the beaker in his hand and foul smelling purple liquid spills all over the carpet. Trying to keep the shock out of his voice he says. "Sorry what do you know about Johnand I?" Mycroft sighs and folds his hands in his lap."You love him don't you." He questions. Sherlock shakes his head and begins cleaning up the broken glass on the floor. Mycroft sees right through his brother's lies and continues to lecture him. "Listen Sherl I know you don't want to listen to me but you can do this the easy way or the hard way. Love is for people who aren't like us. Love is simple chemistry. If fact it's a chemical defect found on the losing side. All this is going to end with is you having your heart broken. Therefor I must advise you cut ties with John immediately." Sherlock looks at his brother in shock, squeezing the towel he was using to mop up the experiment causing it to drip even more chemicals onto the carpet. Finally in a tone laced with repressed anger Sherlock says, "Don't call me Sherl that's the name you used for me when you actually used to care." Mycroft gets up and reaches towards Sherlock who only pulls away from his embrace. "I still care Sherlock. I've always cared." Mycroft says. "Then why did you stop sending letters?" Sherlock questions. "It was for the best Sherlock I was protecting you I made the mistake of giving my heart away to someone and I paid the price. I don't want that to happen to you. You care too deeply Sherlock and it will be your downfall." Sherlock stares at his brother with contempt. "Is this the only reason you came Mycroft? You came back to tell me how to live my life?" Mycroft sits back down letting out a shaking breath finally he begins talking staring at his hands and purposely avoiding Sherlock's piecing gaze. " His name was Greg. We met at school I opened my heart up for the first time and he promptly tore it apart. I came here because I needed to escape. Does that answer your question?" Sherlock nods softening ever so slightly. Mycroft pats the spot on the bed beside him and Sherlock sits down. Mycroft takes this as a cue to keep talking, "I'm going to tell you a story Sherlock a story about the east wind. In this story the east wind is a cold wind, it is a terrifying wind but most importantly it is nesscary. It plucks all that is cruel and unworthy from the earth. Now Sherlock this is only a story but if you want to be a detective you will need help from the east wind. You must become worthy or risk being swept away. " As Mycroft finishes speaking silence lapses between them. Finally Sherlock says indignantly, "I can love John and still be a detective." Mycroft shakes his head "Your missing the point brother mind John is a distraction that will only make you weaker. The east wind is coming. You must cut ties. Don't be stupid Sherlock. Don't dissapoint me." With these words he gets up and leaves the room without looking back.
