Saturday had come. Kenzie still wanted to have a fire, but an indoor fire would have to do. Micah was unavailable and Dieter's family was on an impromptu "vacation" by the government, but Cole and Mikal could still make it. They sat around the fireplace and talked, while listening to music quite loudly. They could do what they wanted because Kenzie's dad wasn't home. They had snacks and sodas. Kenzie's house was a large house, with big rooms. The room they were in had its floor a step lower than the rest of the second floor, and was fairly cool, that is until a fire was started in the fireplace. This fireplace was not an upright hearth, but was not a pit in the floor either; it stretched out from the wall in a square. There was a wide doorway, if you could even call it that, that stretched from the floor to the ceiling and was about 7 feet wide, and a balcony with an amazing view of a field up to the river.
"I gotta use the bathroom," Cole tells them, and walks out of the room. The two girls talk on their own for a while.
"I just can't believe you have this cool of a house, sometimes. It's so terrible your mom couldn't see it," Mikal tells Kenzie.
Kenzie looks offended. "Don't mention her like that," Kenzie snaps. Kenzie's mother had fought overseas. She was an outstanding marine, but was overcome in her last firefight.
"What? Did she not get shot over in... wherever that was?" Mikal responds. She was being genuine but she kept picking the perfectly wrong words.
"Shut up!" Kenzie yells.
Things got riled up quickly. First yelling. Then insults. Kenzie gets up and hits Mikal. There's a long, very tense silence, then Mikal gets up and dives into Kenzie in one movement. Kenzie lands on the table, spilling soda and water over the hardwood floor. She gets up and throws a can at Mikal, and hits her on the side of the head. Mikal charges at Kenzie and they wrestle until accidentally shifting towards the fire. Mikal pushes Kenzie down, not realizing there was a fireplace, but Kenzie did. Kenzie became wide eyed and terrified as she falls backwards. The only thing she had in the area to grab was Mikal. Hoping that Mikal would pull back, Kenzie grabs Mikal's arms. Unfortunately, Mikal wasn't expecting this and wasn't stabilized. They both fall in, screaming. The coals sear through their clothes and burn their skin. The fire licks around their arms and catches onto their hair and garments. Mikal pushes away from the fire, only intensifying the heat on her hands. Kenzie pulls herself forward and gets up, but slips on the fluids on the floor and hits her head against a corner of the table. She feebly groans in an attempt to draw Mikals attention for help, but Mikal is preoccupied, and Kenzie loses consciousness. Mikal runs to the balcony trying to put out her clothes. The balcony has a cover, though, and she has to lean out over the balcony to absorb any rain. In her panic for water, she loses balance and topples forward off the balcony. Mikal falls a story head first into the ground.
Cole had gotten a call from his dad and went downstairs because the music was too loud. He had missed the girls' fight, but he did witness Mikal hit the ground outside the first floor window. After running outside to make sure Mikal was ok, Cole calls for an ambulance, finding Mikal was very much not ok.
Mikal and Kenzie died due to fire or complications of. They have both chosen to leave earth and enter Goraldia.
