CONNOR'S POV:
I met up with Jake and Tyler at the Southern border. I was walking through the field when I saw them both hovering over something.
"What's going on guys?" I asked, walking up.
Jake shook his head and Tyler ran his hands down his face. I looked around them to find a mangled body, with a note attached to it.
It's all over. The note read. It was scribbled on the paper, with a little bit of blood smeared on it.
"Who is this?" I asked. Crouching down to get a closer look at the body. From what it looked like, this person was ganged up on. The slashes across his face made him unrecognizable and the gash in his throat must have been the main cause of death.
" Kyle." Jake murmured.
"WHAT." I practically screamed.
Neither Jake nor Tyler said anything back.
" How did this happen?" I asked.
"What do you think happened?" Tyler retorted.
" No." I said, feeling in shock. I looked at the mangled body of Kyle. His eyes were wide open, gray with death. You would never know it was him.
" It is over." Jake growled. " For them." Jake stormed off, I guess to go report back to his father.
" Doctor Lane is on her way." Tyler sighed, leaning down to close Kyle's eyes.
I stood there for a moment. Our pack is going to have to bury two members this week. James' funeral was supposed to be tomorrow. " So what do you want me to do?" I asked Tyler.
" I have to go check on the rest of the patrol group. Ask them some questions with my dad. Stay here until Dr. Lane arrives." Tyler ordered, walking away.
This is getting too dangerous. Two pack members in a week is way to many to lose. I felt my phone vibrating in my pocket. I pulled it out, Megan's name was on the screen.
"Hello." I answered.
"BAAAABY!" She sang into the phone.
"Hey love." I sighed into the phone. Her upbeat tone didn't match what I was feeling at the moment, but I tried my best to sound happy.
"So, I'm bored."
"I know, but I'm handling pack business right now." I replied.
"Buuuut, I miss you." She dragged out.
" I miss you too baby, but it's important." I stated.
"You're always doing pack stuff. I want you to come upstairs." She giggled.
" As soon as I'm finished I'll be up." I replied.
"WHY NOT NOW." She urged.
I sighed, " Meg. Please. I'll be up soon."
"Fine." She muttered and hung up.
I turned and looked at Kyle's corpse. How could this have happened?

JAKE'S POV:
I walked into the house. I could smell Melissa nearby and I wanted to go to her. But I had to meet with my dad first. The closer I got to my dad's office the more I could smell her. I forced myself to keep going, I reached my dad's office and walked in.
"Son." My dad said, grabbing me into a strong hug.
" I'm fine dad." I reassured him. " I wasn't there." I told him.
He let go of me. " Everyone else is okay. But you saw the boy?" He asked.
"Yes." I said, looking down.
"How bad is it?" He growled.
I could feel the anger radiating off of him in waves. It was setting my own wolf off. The pack wanted blood. An eye for an eye.
" It's bad." I sighed.
" FUCK!" He growled, throwing most of the stuff on his desk to the floor. " How did they get past the border, AGAIN?!" He was screaming at this point. I knew everyone nearby in the house could hear him and I don't really think he cared very much.
" I don't know dad." I answered. " It was one of our strongest patrols they attacked.
"This is two now. Two of the people I was sworn to protect. " He sat down. His face was red. I could practically see the steam coming off of him.
" Dad, none of us knew this would happen."
" Son. This is it, this is the last time this happens. I want larger patrol troops and more training. I want training every other day and I want it to start first thing tomorrow." He ordered. " I need your full attention on this. I'm sorry son, but school and Melissa are going to have to wait till this is over."
"WHAT?" I screamed. " No dad, you can't tell me to forget about my mate." I started pacing back and forth. This is crazy, this man is crazy, everything that's going on is bat shit crazy.
" Yes, son." He said louder. " You can't be distracted right now. The pack is depending on you."
" ARE YOU KIDDING ME?" I growled. " I am not Alpha yet. YOU ARE. It is your responsibility to protect everyone."
"Jake." My father warned. Getting out of his chair.
"No. I don't care what you say. You don't know anything." I was freaking out. He can't be serious?  " If anything, Melissa is going to make me stronger." I stated.
" You can not protect your pack while you're chasing a girl around Jacob." My father stated.
" I'm not chasing her around!" I yelled.
My dad sighed. " Jake. She's a nice girl, very beautiful, but now is not the time."
" DAD! She is chosen for me. She and I met at this time for a reason. You can't tell me not to love her."
"I'm not telling you not to love her , but right now you have other things you need to focus on." He looked at me and I could tell in his eyes he was not going to change his mind about this.
"Then I revoke my status as future Alpha." I walked out of his office, slamming the door behind me. I slammed it so hard that I cracked the wood. The stupid red fancy wood that he just had to have. I knew that would piss him off.
Everyone in the pack house tried to act like they weren't listening, but I knew they were. They deserved to know what's going on, I don't blame them.
I found Melissa still in the kitchen, talking to Jamie. I grabbed her by the arm and lifted her out of her seat. " Let's go." I ordered.
"Ow, Jake." She complained.
"Jake, what are you doing?" Jamie protested, standing up.
"We're leaving." I stated, pulling Melissa out of the kitchen.
"Jake. Jake. stop." She cried. " Jake stop it your hurting me!"
I stopped. I look down at her. She looked petrified. I let go of her gently. Oh my god.
"We hurt her! We hurt our mate!" My wolf cried. My stomach felt sour.
"Mel. I'm - I'm so sorry." I said. I went to gently touch her arm but she pulled away.
"Just take me home." She mumbled, pushing past me and heading for the door.
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
My wolf was on edge and hurting Melissa didn't make me feel any better. I was just so angry, I didn't mean to be forceful with her. I followed her outside. It was beautiful out when I stepped out of the pack house. The sun was shining bright and the sky was as blue as Melissa's eyes. My beautiful Melissa. But no matter how beautiful it is outside, it does not matter how nice the weather has been, dark days have come. In this moment, I envied all of the humans, who were enjoying the nice weather with their loved ones, no idea of the horrors around them. I felt angry again.
I swear, I will KILL every last rouge myself if I have to.

MELISSA'S POV:
Jake unlocked his truck and I hopped in. Clicking my seatbelt with so must force that I hurt my own hand.
"Melissa, listen." He begged, starting the truck.
"No. No way. Just take my home Jake." I said, crossing my arms and looking out of my window. Call it childish, I don't care. I never want to see him again.
"Melissa you don't know what's going on. I'm so sorry." He said, staring at me.
" Of course I don't know what's going on." I stated. " I'm obviously not a werewolf." I gestured toward the entire house that was crawling with them. " I never know what's going on." I started yelling. " This has been the worst week of my life and you have managed to make it even more unbearable!"
The hurt look in Jake's eyes killed me. The bright shades of blue that I could never stop swimming in were gone. I took a second to calm down. I have some much running through my mind that dealing with an angry boy is not going to help with my scatter-brained thoughts. I rolled down the window, I needed fresh air or I was going to puke.
" Melissa. I want wants best for you." He said softly, grabbing my hand. " I want to protect you and care for you." He sighed. " But you won't let me."
"JAKE." I slammed my hands in my lap. " We JUST met."
" We're mate." He stated.
" How do you even know that for sure?" I asked. " I don't even understand this whole mate thing and you just expect me to love you after a couple of days?
He sighed. " There is a lot going on in the pack. I'm under a lot of stress." He admitted. " I know I have not been patient with you. But I am going to change that.
" I don't know Jake." I said cautiously.
He sat there for a moment then started to drive away.
My head was spinning. Even though I keep telling myself I don't like him, I can't help myself. Every time I try to push him away, I feel like my chest is starting to cave in. We sat in silence the whole ride to my house.
When Jake pulled up out front I took off my seatbelt. I was so nervous, I felt like he was leaving forever for some reason. I want him to stay. I don't want to go inside and lay in my bed and think about him all night. Ask him I kept telling myself. Ugh I'm such a baby. Jake stared at me, waiting for me to say something. I could clearly see the hurt in his eyes. I could almost feel it. 1... I counted .. 2.... 3... Do it, you big baby.
"Jake, will you stay?" I aksed, choking out the words.
He didn't say anything right away. Oh god. That's it. I'm going inside now. I went to open my door but he grabbed my hand.
"Of course." He said, squeezing my hand a little tighter.
"Let's walk on the beach." I said, hopping out of the truck.
