"I don't know bro, she's strange...she makes me feel happy but...I also feel like she doesn't love me" Ashton said playing with his coffee "you know what I mean?" He asked looking up.
Luke stared blankly into space.
"Lu?" He asked nudging his friends elbow with his hand "are you even listening?"
Luke blinked and shook his head "were you talking?" He asked realizing Ashton was looking at him.
Ashton rolled his eyes "you're a terrible listener" he said taking a sip of his coffee.
"I'm sorry..I've got a lot on my mind.." He replied putting his hands around his warm mug. He shuffled his feet underneath the café table and scooted closer.
"Like what?" Ashton asked sitting his cup down.
"No, no you talk and I'll listen this time" Luke said, not wanting to share his thoughts.
"Nah my stuffs boring.. your stuff must be pretty interesting" he alluded to Luke's appearance. All black and a pierced lip.
"Probably" Luke said letting a small laugh out "I don't even know...I'm just sick.."
"Sick?"
"Yeah sick, sick of being treated the way I am..sick of being an absolute reject"
"Luke..It's absolutely okay to be an absolute reject" Ashton replied becoming interested in the conversation already.
"They say we're losers.." Luke looked down at his coffee and swirled it.
"But we're alright though, right? Remember how I told you when Michael..left..that things would be different and that it was going to be okay? I told you they would call us things and we would have to be alright with that"
"Yeah" Luke pouted "but let's face it Ashton, we're runaways, long lost children and everybody wants to throw us away.."
"That's not true..and if anyone tells you that then just raise up your middle finger" Ashton laughed.
"Ever since Mikey was taken away it hasn't been the same.."
There was a pause.
"I know..but you've got to let go..that Mikey's gone" Ashton replied knowing Luke's response would be dramatic.
"He is that Mikey, he hasn't changed! He didn't lose anything, it's Calum who's making him be this way!" Luke said through an angry voice.
"What's with the new look? You trying to be like him?" Ashton asked.
"No, I'm just replacing who I am with who I'd rather be" he took a sip of his coffee.
"You don't need to do that" Ashton smiled "being Luke Hemmings the way you were meant to be is more than enough"
"Look Ash, I'm done with this conversation" Luke said shortly. He brought his coffee mug to his lips and took a sip.
"Alright" Ashton said understanding his friend "well if you don't mind..I think I'm going to go ahead and tell you about my problems now"
Luke nodded.
"It's my girlfriend"
"Yeah I thought so" Luke replied.
"She's pregnant"
"What?" He said surprised.
"She's going to have a baby" Ashton responded with a sigh.
"Yeah but..how?"
"Luke, I'm sure you've had this talk before"
"But you haven't had sex with her...have you?"
Ashton shook his head "no" he brought his hands to his forehead and rubbed his eyes.
"Then she's been sleeping around?" Luke asked.
"I guess so.." Ashton brought his hands down.
"What are you going to do?"
Ashton shrugged.
"Does she know who's baby it is?"
"No..." Ashton replied "but no matter who's it is it's mine now"
"Not really, you could leave"
"Leave? At a time like this? Can't you imagine how terrible she must be feeling? Twenty and pregnant..she's so young Luke I can't leave her alone"
"There he goes again. Finding the good in everyone and instantly forgiving" Luke thought to himself.
"I won't let this kid grow up without a Dad" Ashton said finishing his list of opinions.
"It's not yours, she's a slut Ash" Luke said without thinking.
"I know you're not in the best state right now, but try and think about helping someone instead of what's better for you" Ashton replied "I'm sorry you're an outcast, but aren't we all?"
Luke rolled his eyes.
"Why'd you skip school today?" He asked in a mature tone of voice.
"How did you-"
"It's two in the afternoon"
Luke sat back in his chair and crossed his arms "because I wanted to"
"How long has this been going on?"
Luke shrugged.
"How do you think that will effect your life?"
"I don't know Dad how will it?" He asked sarcastically.
Ashton raised an eyebrow.
"You're only two years older than me, stop acting like you know everything"
Ashton shifted his eyes to the window. It had started to rain, making drops of water roll down the smooth glass "I feel like life is like a rain drop on a window" Ashton said "it looks pretty and then it starts to drip and fade into a mess of nothing"
"How inspirational" Luke said.
"Alright Luke, I'm sorry Michael's a psychopath and I'm sorry that you can't see him anymore but things are changing and you need to wake up and realize that" Ashton's voice became serious.
Luke looked down to the ground.
"This is what we live in now, no more happy sunshine days filled with video games and friendship" He said "this is cold hard reality"
Luke stood up.
"Where are you going?" Ashton asked.
He reached in his pocket and pulled out his cigarettes and lighter "for a smoke" he replied and walked towards the door.
Ashton stood as well and followed him "since when?" He asked watching Luke light his killing machine and place it in his mouth.
"Since last week" the cigarette bounced on his lips as he spoke.
"You know that's terribly unhealthy" Ashton said coughing from the smell.
"Yeah" Luke responded blowing smoke out.
"And you know that it can kill you" Ashton covered his nose with his sleeve.
"Uh huh"
"Then why?" Ashton asked.
Luke blew smoke out and held the cigarette in his hand "because I can" he said placing it back.
"Why the new 'I don't give a shit' attitude all the sudden?"
Luke looked up to the sky and blew more smoke "if you care less then life hurts less" he replied.
