I Just Wanted Some Water

***Khai's POV***

A series of ethereal whispering throughout my dreams causes me to wake up wishing Tyrone would have stayed the night.

It's not necessarily scary, but I don't feel like being alone right now.

I sit up when I realize the whispering is still lingering, almost like an echo. The only thing that's mildly unsettling is that it's repeating my name, like it's calling out to me.

I wait in confusion momentarily, trying to remind myself that it's a regular occurrence for me to be delirious when I first wake up.

I stay still momentarily, and feel relieved when it fades out to the point I no longer hear it.

I switch on the moon lamp next to my bed and then just sit there in the low light, pondering and not really wanting to go back to sleep. I kinda want to go wake up my mom, but then I remember that I'm 16 and probably like... ten years too old for that.

I swallow nervously, resulting in me realizing I feel very parched right now. I cautiously make my way out of bed, still feeling unsettled. I just want to hide under my covers, but I'm too thirsty for that and have no water with me currently, so I'm forced to leave me bed and go get some.

I tip-toe down the stairs as carefully and quietly as I can.

The living room is dark, and the kitchen is dark, and everything is so dark and I don't want to be in the dark.

I quickly flip on one of the lowly lit kitchen lights, then make my way over to the cupboard to get a class.

I don't know how it happens, but with my typical luck, I end up knocking another glass to the floor after I take mine.

It shatters into tiny pieces, and already feeling uneasy, the sound alone cause me to jump backwards. However, there is a counter behind me and when I bump into it, the force sends me in the opposite direction. With no reaction time left from still trying to process the start of all this, I'm unable to regain my footing and I fall face first to the floor.

The floor covered in glass.

I gasp as the glass currently in my hand also breaks from the impact of me falling over, slicing the palm of my hand.

Seeing the human hand has a lot of nerve endings, I grimace from the intense pain as blood trickles from it. I manage to withhold from crying out, not wanting to wake my mom up even though I've probably caused enough ruckus already for exactly that to happen.

I try to pull my hand closer, instinctively want to clutch it against myself, but I'm still laying belly down on the floor, surrounded by glass and unsure in the moment if I've hurt myself anywhere else.

I stay still momentarily, trying to figure out how to get up safely. I try to shift my weight a little and carefully brush some glass out the way with my uninjured hand, then place it on the clear spot and try to use all the strength I can find to push myself up somewhat. I immediately press my injured arm against my side, probably to stabilize it.

I pause again, still trying to figure out my next move.

How do I even get myself into these situations?

More importantly, how am I supposed to get myself out?

"Oh no..." I say quietly to myself.

At some point my mom must've gotten here, because I suddenly hear her ask,

"Khai, is that you?"

From where she is, she probably can't see me because I'm behind a counter adjacent to the one that knocked me over in the first place.
