"I just want to know how that even happened," my mom says while handing me a cookie. She pulls out a chair next to me and sits down.

"I don't even know. I took a glass and suddenly one fell on the floor, and because I was already on edge I bumped into the counter when I jumped backwards and then I fell right into the mess," I explain.

My mom shakes her head, and looks thoughtful before asking, "Why were you on edge?"

"It was because of a dream," I reply. "It wasn't like a nightmare, not really. But I just woke up feeling scared and uneasy."

"What was it about?" my mom asks.

"I... don't really remember. All I know is that I heard my name being called over and over. It was like an echoing whisper."

My mom's expression remains thoughtful, but she doesn't say anything.

"It was unsettling. It felt like there was some sort of urgency and I could still hear it for a bit after I woke up. But that could just be post-sleep stupor," I explain.

"Perhaps," my mom replies.

I take a moment to process her answer, trying to figure out what she means by that. However, I don't get much of a chance to figure out what to say anyways, because she stands up again and wanders over to the fridge. She opens the door and just stares inside, as if trying to decide what to eat.

For some reason, seeing her looking for food reminds me of Tyrone's mom.

"Are you pregnant, too?" I joke.

My mom turns her head to face me and chuckles.

"Can't a girl get a midnight snack without being accused of pregnancy?" she asks

I chuckle, too.

"Just feeling a bit peckish," she expands. She turns back to the fridge to continue deciding.

I nod even though she's not looking at me anymore, but it suddenly begs another question.

"Would you ever have a second kid?" I ask.

I swear I see her body go rigid for a second.

"Why do you ask?" she questions, not bothering to look at me this time.

"Well... I mean... no reason, really. Just wondering. I mean, Rassler is back in your life now so I suppose I was just curious," I explain.

My mom is quiet for a few more seconds, but eventually she turns to me yet again. The tension leaves her shoulders, and a smile is pasted on her face now.

"You are all I need," she replies. Her voice is soft, but it holds a fierce affection. She closes the fridge door again and walks back towards me, pulling me into a tight hug. "You are everything to me. I love you so, so much." She says, ruffling my hair a little.

"I love you, too."

"You better be more careful," my mom says, pulling back again. "I can't ever lose you." She sends me another smile, but this one doesn't quite reach her eyes.

I glance up towards her, slightly curious at her sudden seriousness. But instead of asking any further, I just reply, "I'll try, but there's not too much I can do about being clumsy."

My mom laughs softly.

"I suppose not."

"Do you want half of my cookie?" I ask when I remember she was about to get herself something to eat.

"No, that's okay, sweetheart. You enjoy it. I'm more in the mood for something savoury," she explains. "But once you're done with that, you better get some more sleep. You have to get up again for school in about three or four hours," she reminds me.
