Tyrone eyes me hesitantly at first.
"It's starting to get a little more crowded in here, maybe you're becoming somewhat overstimulated." He offers after a moment.
"Y-yeah, maybe." I reply, trying to calm the uneasiness within me. I hope he's right, because it's starting to feel like something is wrong with me.
I debate confiding in him and letting him know it's not the first time something strange like this has happened to me. It's not very often. It's probably only happened twice before, unless I include dreams. But I'm not, cause dreams are meant to be strange. And also because I don't want to believe I'm going crazy.
Eventually, I decide not to tell Tyrone. I know he's not feeling okay today, but he won't talk to me, either.
Should I blindly follow his example? Probably not. Could this cause a strain on our friendship? Most likely.
But if he really is struggling, the last thing I want him to do is stress about this as much as I am.
"Anyway... I guess we should probably get to class, eh?" I ask.
Tyrone nods, but he's still giving me that look he does where he studies me super closely, like he's trying to figure something out or trying to read my mind.
He doesn't ask, however, and instead quietly walks alongside me.
We do briefly separate to head to our own lockers, and I'm surprised that mine opens at the first try today. I've never opened it with no struggling yet.
I simply cannot keep this moment to myself.
"I just opened this all by myself with no help from anyone else and got it on the first try." I say to a random student who passes by. They just glance at me as they walk past, then completely ignore me.
"Okay..." I say awkwardly while scratching my head.
I suddenly notice there's a girl a locker away from me, also staring at me now. I can see her eyes are holding judgement, even though they're hiding behind black bangs. She's wearing dark make-up, too; a stereotypical emo. I swallow nervously and offer a tiny smile.
In my defense, she looks scary. But then again, a lot of things are scary to me.
"I uh... opened my lock-"
"Yeah, all by yourself, I heard you the first time." She finishes. "What, do you want a certificate or something?"
"Well i-it's just that... uhm..." I trail off, glancing at her nervously. More than anything, she seems really confused.
"This locker is like... super hard to get open, you know!?" I try to sound enthusiastic to compensate for some of the awkwardness, but instead I make it even worse.
"Oh gosh." I mutter quietly to myself, hiding my face in my hands.
I hear the girl scoff, and I debate hiding my head in my locker instead.
However, relief floods through me when I hear Tyrone's voice ask,
"Khai, what are you up to now?"
"Uhm... just embarrassing myself at my excitement over getting my locker open by myself without any struggling and on the first try."
"Really?" Tyrone asks, finally being the first person to match my energy.
"Yeah, I finally did it!"
"Congrats!" Tyrone says, giving me a high five.
I smile, forgetting all the embarrassment and feeling all happy inside again.
"Do you have all your stuff?" Tyrone asks.
