Blake's POVI bend over, hands on my legs as I try to catch my breath. "Man..." I pant. "Running...ain't as easy...as it used...to be..."
"C'mon, man!" I hear Jake call a few yards ahead on the track field. "The girls are runnin faster than ya!"
"Oh, yeah, Cahldon?" Danica calls to the redhead. "How 'bout I race ya? Whoever loses owes the winner ten bucks!"
"You're on!" he laughs.
"Okay." Danica says with a smirk. "Ready? Setgo!" she quickly says the last two words and sprints off ahead, her dark brown hair flowing out behind her. "No fair!" he calls indignantly, chasing after the dark-skinned girl. "You cheated!"
"I didn't cheat...you're just slow!" she calls back. "And you're evil!" he laughs. "Yep!" she calls out, laughing maniacally. "Say what you want, you're both crazy!" I shout, laughing as I try to catch up."Thank you!" they both call at the same time, causing me to shake my head.
"Your all crazy." I hear the words, causing me to turn my head to the right. "How?" I ask Kaila, referring to how easily she's able to keep up. "I was in track in eighth grade." she says, shrugging her shoulders. "This is nothing."
"Alright, Maggots!" calls a female voice. "Front and center!" In response to her command, we all gather around our gym teacher, Mrs. Terry.
Kaila's POV
Mrs. Terry is a small woman, about my height, with short, brown hair pulled back in a ponytail. Despite her size, rumor has it that she was quite the formidable foe on the battlefield, as she used to be in the army. The woman loved her camouflage, judging by the fact that she wore it every day. She was also known for her infamous temper.
"Look at you all," Mrs. Terry says, eyeing us with disgust. "You've been doing this almost every day for over a month now, and you still. can't. HANDLE IT!" she punctuates her words with footsteps before turning to face us, yelling the last two.
"This is not RECESS, LADIES!" she shouts, beginning to pace once again. "This is gym class! A required course for you to GRADUATE!" I flinch each time she shouts, fearing I may be deaf by the end of the class. "You worms wouldn't last FIVE SECONDS on the battlefield!"
A timid hand is raised beside me. Sasha stands next to me, clearly afraid. Mrs. Terry marches over to Sasha. Despite the fact that Sasha was much taller than our gym teacher, it was clear that Mrs. Terry was more intimidating. "What is it, Soldier?" she asks, staring down the poor girl.
"With all due respect, ma'am....."
"SPEAK UP, SOLDIER!" Mrs. Terry shouts, causing Sasha to whimper.
"W-with all due respect, m-ma'am, we're not training f-for battle." Sasha stutters, causing the intense veteran to grow a vein.
"ARE YOU QUESTIONING MY TEACHING METHODS, MAGGOT?" Mrs. Terry shouts, causing Sasha to trip backward, shaking her head"N-no, it's just that...maybe there's a better way...". "I'VE HAD ENOUGH OF YOU! YOU'RE LOWER THAN A MAGGOT! YOU'RE NOTHING BUT A WEAK, WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT, AND YOU DARE QUESTION MY METHODS? I'LL TEACH YOU TO BE RESPECTFUL!" I step in between the ex-sergeant and the terrified girl just as Mrs. Terry raises her hand, causing her fist to connect with my face in the stead of Sasha's stomach. The force of the blow knocks me to the ground.
"KAILA!" several voices call at once.
I hear several sets of footsteps hurriedly making their way over to me before I feel someone's presence in front of me. I open my eyes to see several blurry figures in front of me, slowly coming into focus. I see Sasha, Danica, Darek, Jake, and Blake staring at me, shock and concern on all their faces. Horror at something I can not see causes Sasha and Danica to gasp and cover their mouths in horror. I reach up to rub the dull throbbing on my face, only to feel hot, sticky liquid. I pull my hand back to see that it's covered in blood. The dull ache quickly turns to full on pounding.
