Right after the sorting ended, the golden plates filled with delicious food. Normally, the four friends would dig in, but two of them were really distracted.
Sirius propped his elbow on the table and put his chin in his hand. He looked sadly at the Slytherin table on the other side of the Great Hall. There sat Regulus, who seemed to be in a distance conversation with his friends. Sirius felt absolutely horrible, but he wouldn't blame himself for getting out of an abusive home as quickly as he could, even if it hurt to do so.
Meanwhile, Remus kept nervously looking around and picking around his food with his fork. There would be a full moon in one week's time, and he had to be ready. And plus, he had
a few "relationship" problems he had to work out.Peter barely noticed anything. He was actually flirting with a fifth year named Lauren Adkins. Can you believe it? Short, stout little Peter was actually flirting! However, Lauren didn't pay much attention; she just stared off into space and occasionally nodded her head.
James, on the other hand, was quite worried about his friends. Don't get him wrong, he still ate his food because, after all, a boy's got to eat, but he knew what both his friends were going through.
Lily noticed the unusual behavior among the four friends. During every Opening Feast, they would cause a scene and laugh until pumpkin juice dribbled out of their noses, but tonight they were barely talking to each other. Remus, she especially noticed, seemed to be quite anxious. Out of all the Marauders, she was closest to Remus, so she decided that he would tell her if something was wrong. But for the time being, she might just have to talk to James.
After the feast, all the students began to file out of the Great Hall. As Prefects, James and Lily led the Gryffindor first years to the portrait of the Fat Lady.
James stood before the portrait and spoke the password "Fortitudo" (meaning courage or moral bravery) and stepped aside as all Gryffindors walked inside. Everyone went to their dorms, but Lily kept James behind.
"Potter? I need to speak with you," she said firmly.
James smirked. "Ah do you? Finally come around, have you?"
Lily rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. "It's about your friends-they're acting strangely. What's going on?"
James shifted uncomfortably. "Lily, you and I may be soulmates, but some things I can't tell you." He thought of how many secrets he had kept from Lily so far.
However, she didn't even acknowledge his answer. Instead, her face softened and she quietly said, "You called me Lily."
James smiled slightly. "Well that is your name isn't it?" And began to walk to the stairs leading to his dormitory.
Lily smiled at her feet, then looked up. Come on Lily she thought. "Hey Potter!" she called out.
James turned around, but before he could say anything, Lily ran up and kissed him. Her arms wrapped around his neck and James placed his hands around her waist.
When they pulled apart, James smiled again and tilted his head. "I told you we were soulmates."
A/N Ok I actually really enjoyed writing this chapter. But I kind of just want to get something straight with all of my readers: My chapters are not set as a specific length/word count because sometimes I either don't know how to continue that chapter or I just don't have time to make it longer. Please just hang in there!
