Chapter 17

Lily's POV

My heart was pounding. I was basically dragging James out of the Great Hall after Peter's speech, and I wasn't even sure where I was taking him. I decided to just take him outside.

We ran into several people on the way. When we ran into Professor McGonagall, she wished James good luck and to "remember what I've taught you James", while I blushed madly.

We also unfortunately bumped into Severus. Before James could say anything, I pushed past my former friend, trying to stay calm. After Severus had called me that word, that horrible word, I never wanted to speak to him again. In addition to trying to get me to talk to him, he's also been sending me letters using his owl. But as soon as I would see his scrawny handwriting displaying my name on an envelope, I would just get rid of it. I couldn't bring myself to face him. Some Gryffindor I am.

"Lils? Where are you taking me?" James voice echoed behind me. I ignored him. "Lily?" I kept walking.

"Lily Evans, tell me what's going on!" James exclaimed, screeching to a halt. I froze. He yelled at me. He never yelled at me. Oh get over yourself Lily, it's not like he has to accept you all the time. I mean look at you, you look dreadful the voice in my head told me. That voice. It belonged to Severus.

"Lily? Please look at me and tell me what you're thinking, I can't read your mind," James said, a little more gently this time.

"Of course not, that would be absurd," Severus' voice rang as he pushed past the two of us with a grunt. (A/N AVPM ANYONE?)

I sighed. "I wanted to talk to you somewhere private. About us, about your friends, about everything. I just wanted to talk."

James smiled weakly. "Why didn't you just say so? Accio broomstick." James' high-end broomstick came racing towards him and he held out his hand. Oh no. He grabbed my arm and pulled me behind him as we lurched into the air.

I held on tightly to his waist. James knew I was absolutely terrified of flying, and heights in general.

"James!" I screamed into his shirt. "Take me down now!"

James laughed. "Oh come on Lily, it's not that bad. I just want to show you something."

He flew around for a few minutes, which felt like hours. "Look, Lils. Please open your eyes and look how beautiful it is."

I reluctantly peeled myself off his back and looked up. I found myself looking at the horizon, where the sun met the grounds of the school, the castle standing out against the sky. He was right. It was beautiful.

"James," I whispered. "Please." The scenery may have been beautiful, but it wasn't enough to make me forget. I softly cried into his shirt. "Please, I don't like this at all."

James didn't say anything. He just made a slow turn and descended. When we were two feet from the ground, he finally said, "Lily, you're fine, come on." But I couldn't bring myself to let go.

"Lils, it's alright. I'm here, don't worry." I nodded and let him carry me off the broomstick. Still holding me in his arms, he carried me all the way to Gryffindor Tower. Before now, I had never really realized how strong he was.

When we entered the common room, he set me on the couch and rubbed the back of his neck. "Sorry," he muttered sheepishly. "I didn't know it would scare you that much."

I tried to chuckle lightly. "I can handle a lot, just not that. I thought you knew."

He seemed guilty. "I'm sorry that I didn't," he muttered again.

"Come here," I said, gesturing to the seat beside me. He sat down and I leaned my head on his shoulder.

"I know you didn't mean to. Thanks for trying to help," I told him.

"Lily.....I think I love you."

I chuckled. "Well could you wait till you're positive and then let me know?"

He smiled. "Ok then, I love you."

I looked at him and place a kiss on his lips. "That's good," I said, pulling back and placing my head back on his shoulder. "Because I love you too."
