Paragon flew fast and high over the Atlantic Ocean—just below the cruising altitude of a passenger airplane. This wasn't the fastest that he could go, but it was pushing the limits of safety. His body routinely broke the laws of physics, but the world around him wasn't safe from the aftermath. Thankfully, he was able to avoid passing too close to the few flights that were still in the air. Otherwise, his wake might've knocked them out of the sky.
The villain, Mod, is in the middle of the Atlantic. He'd spent the last few minutes engaging Summit and Brotherhood forces... and Mod hadn't bothered to hide his location.
Every other time Mod fought, he'd gone to great lengths to hide his location. Paragon didn't understand the nuances of the technology. He was a warrior, not a scientist. But he understood the hit and run tactics and guerilla warfare.
Mod's change in tactics was... concerning.
He'd clearly gotten stronger—powerful enough to fight two of Earth's mightiest supers. Though Paragon outclassed both Amarque and Helion, it didn't bode well for Earth. Mod was now the strongest single Earthling, and Paragon was the only check on his power.
The Dunamen envoy picked up speed, only subconsciously aware of the fact. It was hard to tell just how fast he was moving with only the ocean as a frame of reference. The roaring sound of wind and fire was growing louder, but that wasn't always a good indicator of speed. The more power he used, the less physics made sense.
There—
Even from hundreds of miles away, Paragon could make out the faces of Mod, Amarque, Helion, and Ocean Guardian. They were standing on a black and silver island in the middle of the ocean. They weren't fighting, but they clearly had been. The Atlantic churned with waves, and the three capes were breathing heavily. They regarded Mod with suspicion and apprehension.
Meanwhile, the cyborg had sensed Paragon coming. The pair locked eyes from a hundred miles away.
Time seemed to slow as Paragon considered his options:
He could destroy Mod's body—accelerate and fly through him at relativistic speed. The resulting impact and shockwave would vaporize the cyborg and the underwater reactor. With any luck, Amarque's power would keep him and Helion safe.
But Mod wasn't confined to one body. So even if this one was destroyed, the cyborg could build another one. That was a troubling thought. No matter what happened today, the Resistance wasn't over. It could take years to stamp them out.
The one other plus to destroying Mod's current body was the hope that his backups would be weaker. Artificers were limited by resources, and so they usually had one main base and one main powersuit.
Paragon changed focus. Maybe it was better to capture or incapacitate him. Even if Mod managed to escape into a new body, the Brotherhood could study the empty one. Maybe they could figure out a way to take him down once and for all.
That was, of course, if the Brotherhood hadn't fallen already.
There were battles raging all over the globe, and there was no telling who would come out on top. As far as problems went, Mod was the tip of the iceberg. The Resistance's AI was a continual thorn in the Brotherhood's side. There was no guarantee that the Brotherhood and the Summit would win this war.
It seemed laughably far-fetched, but the Resistance might become the new rulers of Earth.
Not that it mattered. This war was a farce. The Dunamen would arrive any moment now, and when they did, Earth would be under their control.
It took microseconds for Paragon to decide on his course of action. He would disable Mod and capture his body. Then, when the Dunamen arrived, they would figure out how to stamp the Resistance out for good.
