It was an unusually peaceful afternoon for Daniel Denner. His baby was asleep and quiet (something that didn't happen often). His daughter, Haylee, was upstairs on her computer or phone, doing what teenagers her age often did.
As for Daniel's wife, she was at work today.
The entire house was almost completely silent. Daniel savored this moment, knowing it wouldn't last long.
After a few sweet short minutes of watching TV without any interruptions, he heard the doorbell ring loudly throughout the house. Daniel muttered some complaints to himself as he got up to answer the door.
Swinging the door open, he saw a small boy in old fashioned clothing, standing on his front porch, patiently. He had rosy cheeks, a twinkle in his innocent, little eyes, and a smile that showed off his dimples. "Hey, Mister!" he said in a cheerful tone. "Do ya have a lollipop for me?"
Daniel, confused, shook his head. "Uh, sorry, kiddo, I don't have one," he replied, apologetically.
The boy beamed. "Okee, sorry to bother you!"
Daniel closed the door with a sigh. He had no idea what all of that was about, but he didn't think it was exactly safe of parents to just let their 6-year old son to go wandering off by himself to a stranger's home.
Just as he was about to sit back down on the couch, the door bell rang again. But this time, whoever was at the door was impatient, jamming their finger into the doorbell several times over and over again.
Daniel wanted to cover his ears. "I'm coming, I'm coming!" he called out, irritated.
Opening the door once again, he saw the same little boy waiting for him. "Hiya, Mister!" he sang. "Do ya have a lolli for me?"
What is up with this child's insistence on lollipops? Daniel thought, feeling sour.
"Like I said before, kid, I don't have any lollipops," he said, as patient as possible. "Sorry."
The little boy's eyes sparkled with amusement. "Oh, sorry to ask you, sir!" he exclaimed, smiling. "Bye, Mister!"
Daniel closed the door, scowling to himself. Jeez, where is that kid's parents? If he shows up at that door one more time, I may lose it-
Ding-dong Ding-dong Ding-dong Ding-dong Dingdong dingdong dingdong dingdongdingdongdingdong!!!!
"SHUT UP!" Daniel wanted to scream.
Instead, he hurried to the door, determined to put an end to this. He shoved the door open. But to his shock, nobody was there.
He heard a female shriek from upstairs and he gasped. "HAYLEE?!" he yelled.
He stormed upstairs into her room, seeing bloodstains splattered across the floor. "H-Haylee?" he wailed in horror. Her room was completely empty.
DING-DONG!
He started downstairs slowly, horrified to open the front door. Where was Haylee? What did this insane little brat want from Daniel?
Daniel hesitated before opening the door. The little boy appeared before him, a grin spread across his face. "You lied to me!" the boy said cheerfully. He held up the bloody head of Haylee by a pole that had been forced through the flesh of her throat. "You did have a lollipop for me!"
