Beca's head thumped over and over as she woke up the next morning. Jesse's arm was wrapped around her tightly, limiting her movements when she tried to sit up. When she finally managed to gently manoeuvre his arm away without interrupting his sleep, she threw her legs over the side of the bed and stood up with a big yawn, tying her hair into a quick bun and grabbing his shirt to put on.
She needed coffee badly, so she made her way to the kitchen, passing the living room where Chloe was sprawled on the couch, fully dressed in clothes from the night before and giving off a stench of a variety of different alcohols which made Beca feel uneasy.
Wrinkling her nose, she tried to shake Chloe awake, but there was only a groan and no movement.
"Chloe, wake up. You smell like shit, and I think I'm gonna puke," Beca said, covering her mouth.
Chloe shifted and slowly pushed herself up off the couch.
"Man, I didn't even drink that much..." Chloe slurred.
"Right, move your ass into the shower while I prepare some coffee. I'm guessing you want it strong. And then you're going to tell me everything that happened yesterday," Beca said forcefully.
Chloe trudged towards the bathroom saying "You sound like Aubrey, just saying," and Beca just rolled her eyes, turning back to the kitchen.
Ten minutes later, the coffees were ready and Chloe was walking back into the living room in a tank top and shorts with a towel wrapped around her head. Beca watched her as she descended onto the sofa.
"So?" was all Beca said.
Chloe sighed "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to ditch you-"
"Who's the guy?" Beca urged, realising she'd said that a little to quickly. For some reason she felt protective. She saw Chloe's cheeks turn a light shade of pink.
"He's called Dylan, we met before yesterday. It was a funny story, actually. He lost his job because of me, but I won't bore you with the details. And, before you ask, nothing happened," Chloe added when Beca opened her mouth.
Relief. But Beca quickly shook that off and frowned. "Aw, man."
Chloe laughed. "No, I like him, I don't want to jump into anything too quickly."
"You got his number though?"
"Yeah, I did."
"So what did you do?" Beca felt like an interrogator, but Chloe didn't seem to mind.
"We took a bottle of cider down to the park and pretty much got drunk on the hill. But I bet you had way more fun than me," Chloe said, raising an eyebrow.
"What?"
"Oh, I heard you when I came in, and if he's staying in there with you, you're going to have to keep it down or he'll be on here," Chloe said, pointing towards Beca's bedroom and then patting the couch beneath her.
It was Beca's turn to blush.
"Dont worry, I was drunk. I'll pretend I didn't hear anything," Chloe added with a wink.
Beca shook her head. "Hey, don't change the subject, dude. Your gonna need to tell me more than that," she demanded pointing a finger at her best friend.
"What more is there to say. We talked. We got to know each other a little bit. I'm not gonna rehearse the conversation," Chloe said, making out that it was obvious.
Beca nodded. "So you got onto that career yet, or do still have no clue?" She started, knowing that they hadn't discussed the matter in a long time.
"Ah," Chloe said looking at her feet, before taking her coffee and sipping it. "Well, okay. I was going to leave it but I think I need to give it a go."
"Sorry, I'm a little behind with this," Beca said confusedly.
"I'll start from the beginning. So, I was really struggling to find any decent work, you know that. And I kind had a breakdown. I felt worthless," Chloe explained.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Beca asked, a little hurt that she hadn't known.
"I'll get to that. It's not that I didn't want to tell you. You'll understand when I finish. So after that, I had a talk with my dad about it and he came up with something... Along the lines of music. He said I should be a song writer," Chloe hesitated.
Beca's eyes widened, and she saw Chloe have something that looked like guilt on her face.
"Oh crap, why did I never think of that?" She put a hand to her forehead. "Chlo, you should have said!" Beca was now more frustrated because they could have been working on something right at that minute instead of just sitting there.
"I wanted to give you time as a producer first. You're new to the job and I didn't want to put pressure on you to help me in case you weren't confortable yet," Chloe said.
"Oh, Chloe. I do want to help you. I can see it. You write the music, I produce it. Have you come up with anything so far?"
Beca was suddenly excited. It was like a dream that she was desperate to come true. She'd needed it forever but she didn't know until that moment.
"Well, yeah. I did. I wrote a couple of songs."
"A couple? In that short space of time?" Beca was shocked, in a good way.
"Do you really think I'm good enough, though?" Chloe asked. "I mean, I've only ever done Acapella."
"Yes! Why would you even think you're not?"
"I did a gig. I was trying to get some experience but it didn't turn out great," Chloe told her.
"I'm sure all of the artists have had similar experiences. It'll only make you stronger Chlo. Believe me, you have a beautiful voice, and I would know. I've stood next to you for the past four years and heard you. Your instruments will come in handy too," Beca said.
She could see Chloe's eyes water slightly as her face turned up into a smile. It meant so much to her, and Beca could see that.
"So, what do you say?" Beca asked standing up. Chloe jumped up too.
"Hell yeah!" Chloe shouted, before she caught Beca in a hug and they spun around. They were both laughing and Beca couldn't believe how happy she felt. She just wanted to scream out her joy for the world to hear.
Jesse came out of his room so abruptly that his t-shirt was on the wrong way round.
"What's going on?" he asked, squinting in the light since he'd just woken up.
"The future. We're going to be stars," Chloe exclaimed.
