When the door slammed, Beca almost fell into the sofa as she broke down. Her sobs were so hysterical, but she couldn't control herself. It's like she had broken her own heart and she dread to think what it had done to Jesse's. What had she done? Why was she so stupid as to question Jesse's loyalty in such a way?
She didn't deserve someone like him, and yet they had been together for four years. For how much longer that would last, she wasn't sure now.
Chloe dropped the shopping bags she had carried in with her and hurried over to Beca.
"Oh, Bec. Come here," she muttered, taking her best friend into her arms. Beca brawled into Chloe's shoulder, thankful for the support. She was a mess, but with Chloe by her side she knew she was okay.
Chloe rubbed her back soothingly, occasionally saying that it was okay and that it would all work out.
They stayed in that motion for a good half an hour before Beca released herself and stared at her toes. Her make-up was all smudged down her face and she was aware of the stain she had made on Chloe's shirt.
"What did I do?" Beca muttered.
"What happened?" Chloe questioned.
Beca explained what had happened. How the argument had escalated from nothing. How she'd said the words that were equivalent to stabbing her boyfriend in the heart. How her relationship was now likely to be in tatters because of her.
Chloe said nothing after. She just looked upset, but Beca didn't know who for. Perhaps she knew Beca was wrong but felt that that wasn't the time to say it out loud.
"Okay, I get that what you said was bad. But he'll forgive you, surely? I mean, him going for a drink with Aubrey isn't the least suspicious thing I've ever heard. He should have thought twice when he said yes, right?" she finally said.
Beca looked up into Chloe's bright, blue eyes. What would she have done without her ginger sidekick? She had always been there for Beca, but she wasn't sure she'd been a completely loyal friend to her in return back. She felt she had to change. To become a better person, but...
That's when she leaned over and kissed Chloe.
It was wrong in every way, but at the same time oddly satisfying and amazing. She didn't know what she was doing, but she couldn't make it end. Chloe's lips were frozen and rigid at first, but they weren't pulling away.
After a second, a relaxation fell between them, and the tension was gone. However, as Beca moved in closer, Chloe leaned back and pushed her gently away.
"Beca..."
A look of guilt was displayed on Chloe's face as she stared at her feet. Her cheeks were flushed, and her hands were fiddling at a high pace. Beca had never seen her look so awkward.
"I can't. I just... I shouldn't say this, but I think I feel the same," Chloe confessed. Her eyes glistened, and Beca knew she was messing around.
"It's not fair. You need to work things out with Jesse," Chloe stated. She looked as if she was in pain for a second. She glanced up to see Beca, who knew Chloe had been correct, but she didn't want her to be. She was in complete shock after everything that had happened.
"I'm sorry," Beca said, avoiding eye contact at all costs. "I need some air..."
Beca left the apartment and just strolled down the stairs, ignoring the lift in front of her. That day was beginning to become too much for her to handle and she wasn't sure what she was going to do. She was way beyond a mess now. She was a complete train wreck.
She wanted to be back at Barden, when the only things on her mind were the Bellas, Jesse and producing music. It was so much easier.***
Three days passed since their fight, and Jesse still hadn't picked up the phone. Beca had left hundreds of voicemails but they had all been ignored. She was becoming so fed up of it that she had to do something. It wasn't something she would just let go, so she had to be vigilant.
At work, Kevin had noticed Beca's change in mood, and thought it appropriate to bring it up.
"Hey, Becky. You got a minute?" he asked when he approached Beca during her lunch break. She was lying on two bean bags, eating a Mars bar, not giving a crap about anything at the time. She sat up when he called her over.
"It's Beca," she said calmly, rolling her eyes and sitting up.
"That's what I said, didn't I?"
It had been weeks, and he still didn't know her name properly.
"Sure. So, what can I do for you, Boss?" Beca said, putting on the most enthusiastic smile she could muster.
He signalled with one finger for her to follow him into his office. It seemed official, and it worried Beca a little. Some heads turned, and she couldn't help feel just a bit self-conscious.
Kevin sat down and propped his feet up on the desk without even offering Beca a seat, so she stood there, awaiting his explanation.
"Right. Past few days, yeah? It's not been great, has it? And I think you know that," Kevin said.
Beca sighed. "Yeah, I know. I'm sorry..."
"What's going on? Is it something at work? Are you not getting along with people, or-"
"No, no. It's... It's boyfriend problems," Beca stuttered.
Kevin sat back. "Ah. Yeah, that happens a lot. Hey, why don't you just take a day off tomorrow, use the longer weekend to sort yourself out, and then I want you back fresh on Monday as the girl who produced those sick tunes for Snoop Dogg. I'll get Dex to do your paperwork so don't worry about that," Kevin said, rubbing his eyes and penciling something into his schedule.
"Um, okay? Are you sure that's cool?" Beca asked unsurely.
"Yeah, yeah. Do what you have to do, but Charlie's back on Monday so you have to do. We're starting his third song so you have to be on form. You got that?" Kevin demanded.
"Sure thing, Boss. I won't let you down," Beca nodded.
Perhaps this was when she was supposed to do something. But Jesse hated her guts. He wasn't picking up the phone for a reason. But this had happened before and it had turned out okay. But maybe she had gone too far and this was the end. Did she move on or did she fight for their relationship? It was a tough desision to make, but it would shape her future. Why was everything so hard?
