"But Maddie, it's only 10:30!" Johnny complained as he walked down the hall.
Kylee and I had patiently sat through a Toy Story marathon and were now ready to get the actual sleepover started.
"We can watch more movies in the morning okay? You know how grumpy you get when you don't enough sleep." I said, watching his shoulders slump in defeat. We finally reached his room, opening the third door on the left.
Luke and Kylee filed in behind us. When Johnny was old enough for a big boy bed, I gave him my bunk bed, choosing instead to take one of the other beds from on of the guest rooms. He thought the white wood was too girly so we painted it black and I bought a new comforter for it.
The guest room where I took the bed from was turned into a makeshift movie theater, thanks to the help of Kylee and Mrs. Knight. We cleared everything out and set up a white sheet along the far wall. We went to a discount store and bought thick blackout curtains, a used movie projector, and a couple bean bags thanks to the savings from my previous jobs. We washed everything and set it up in the room.
It was my favorite room in the whole house and where we had spent the past couple hours. I had insisted on buying everything, so it could actually feel like something was mine. Sometimes when I couldn't sleep, I would take my pillow and go to the movie room, where I felt safe and comfortable.
The boys were already ready for bed so Kylee and I took turns tucking them in and hugging them goodnight. We knew they would probably stay up and talk for a while so we turned out the lights and gave them a flashlight.
"Come get us if you need anything, okay?" I said to them closing the door.
"Okay!" they called behind me.
Kylee and I all but ran back to the MR (Movie Room) and flung ourselves onto the bean bags.
We were about ten minutes into the movie and Rob Schneider was just about to sing at the funeral when Kylee suddenly paused it.
"Hey!" I protested.
"We need to talk about the science project. That jerk set you up! I bet he had the teacher change the lists! the nerve! I'm gonna-"
"Kylee," I interjected patiently.
"I can handle him. He probably thinks I'm gonna do this whole project by myself. But he's never met the real Maddie Greggor, now has he?" I said with a sly grin.
Kylee grinned back.
"I knew there was a reason you were my best friend," she said. She unpaused the movie. We stayed there all through Grown Ups 1 and 2, deciding to just sleep there for the night.

"Text me later!" Kylee said as she and Luke walked out the door.
I had told her Blake would be coming after football practice and we had spent some of the morning relaxing until she and Luke had to go. They were going to a birthday party for their little cousins all the way in Lafayette.
Now that it was Johnny and me, it felt lonely, as it usually did.

About 3pm, the door finally rang. I was reading in the living room while Johnny played on his game boy and had completely forgotten Blake was coming. I had actually thought it was my Dad coming home and was dreading it.
