Chapter 28 Heading Off In Dark Times

Sang's POV

We gathered around the three big trucks from the 1960's to say our goodbyes to the men heading off. It felt similar to how you would feel sending off guys to war. You know they are smart, skilled, well trained and have each other's backs, but the doubt still lies in your head if you will get to see them again and how long it will be before they come back safely.

The whole camp turned out to send the three teams off. Everyone giving their well wishes. Each team had enough supplies and rations to last them a week. No one wanted them to be gone longer than that, for safety sake.

I heard Sean sigh and looked over to him. His eyes were trained on Diesel. "What's wrong Sean?" I asked quietly, for only he and I to hear.

"Diesel's team is leaving and that guy has all the symptoms of depression. I don't' know what to do for him as a doctor. It just frustrates me."

"Is there anyone with psychology training here? I mean, you all seem so talented, I can't imagine not one of you having some training in the art of mind control."

Sean laughed, "Pookie, we aren't Jedi. I can't just wave my hand in front of his face and say, "No more sadness, you have. Better, you must feel." He spoke in a funny voice as he said this and I giggled like crazy. He wiggled his eyebrows and planted a kiss on my lips. "I will never get tired of making you giggle, just so I can cure your disease." He chuckled.

By now, Kota, North and Gabriel had said goodbye with manly hugs from everyone else. I gave each one a searing kiss and encouraging words to come back to me. They all looked determined as they climbed in the truck, North in the driver's seat, Gabriel in the middle and Kota in the passenger seat. They each gave a tiny salute with their two fingers, going from their eyebrow away from their face, and then drove away. I held in the sobs I wanted to let out, but couldn't help the silent tears that leaked from my eyes as I watched them drive away.

Sean slung an arm over my shoulders, "Pookie, I need your help." Sean spoke loud enough that others from our family could hear him. "We need to figure out how to get Diesel out of his funk."

"He just needs a girl." Luke offered. "But not Cupcake." He gave me a pointed look and I shook my head 'no' at him.

"And how do you suggest we go about getting him a girl?" Nathan asked. "It's not like we just go down to the corner store, Girls 'R Us, and buy what he needs."

"I am just saying, right now, I am not comfortable with the idea of going outside of the shelter to kidnap a girl for him either." Victor held his hands up in a 'don't shoot me' stance.

"We would never do such a thing, Mr. Morgan."

I made a suggestion, "Maybe we can get him to sign up for a time in the kitchen with Ms. Nancy..."

"Ooo, that's just gross! Diesel and Ms. Nancy?" Luke was making a disgusted face. So was Nathan and Silas.

I lightly laughed and continued, "You cut me off before I could finish my sentence. If we could get one of the single girls in camp to work in the kitchen with Diesel and Ms. Nancy, she will get them thinking about... Things."

Silas added to the conversation, "I don't think Kiera would go for that. She thought of him as her attacker for a while. Even though he didn't do it, I don't think she trusts him."

"Has anyone noticed if Makayla or Vivian has shown any interest in Diesel or his team?" Victor asked.

"I still think he needs someone to talk to." Sean interrupted our matchmaking scheme. "A girl for him is great, but it just might mask his depression."
