Chapter 3- Working Hard In Dark Times

I opened my eyes to a stream of light beaming right in on my eyes through the window. I moved my head backwards just three inches. That was enough to remove the laser light of the sun that was burning my retinas through my eyelids. But, moving away from the light caused me to move closer to someone that was snuggled into my back. I don't remember falling asleep last night next to anyone.

I took in a deep breath to clear my head. My sense of smell was overwhelmed with the fragrance of Moss and Berries. I knew in an instant, Victor was behind me. Then I remembered how he lost, or according to the guys he won, 'Twenty-one Shoot'. This week Victor would be sharing my bed with me. My nerves were soothed, as the thought of sleeping next to Victor all week flitted through my brain.

His warm breath was still coming out in even little puffs on the back of my neck. The way his breath moved my hair, it was tickling me. I was trying not to wake Victor up, so I reached up and brushed my fingers over my neck. All that did was make the situation worse. Now, my hair was tickling my neck and my ear and the side of my face.

I bit my lower lip to keep quiet as I silently giggled. My silent laughter was causing my whole frame to shake. "Princess... why are you causing a bedquake?"

I let the giggles escape my mouth freely, "a bedquake? What is that?" My giggles were slowing down now since Victor had half sat up, propping his head in his hand, as he rested on his elbow.

He looked down at me and I rolled onto my back to see his face. "You know, a bedquake?" Victor studied my face as he waited for me to respond. I lifted my eyebrows and waited for his explanation, "... shaking the bed uncontrollably, like an earthquake. A bedquake!"

I lightly giggled and noticed that his eye ignited with a small flame when he watched me laughing. I liked seeing this look on him. I felt all warm and tingly in my heart and my stomach felt like I had fluttering butterflies trying to break free. In the distance I heard a trumpet playing revelry. I sighed and rolled my eyes. I don't know if I can take hearing that every morning.

"I think we need to move the bed over that way about a foot." I pointed over Victor's shoulder.

"Why?"

"Because, the light won't burn my eyes first thing in the morning over there."

We climbed out of bed, I pushed my side while Victor pulled on his side. With a loud scrape on the floor, we moved the bed. The door to my room opened. Silas spoke up, "Everything okay in here Aggele? I heard a loud noise."

"I just needed the bed one foot that way. We took care of it." I responded, smiling at Victor.

"Go get ready Princess, today you are working the kitchen with Luke."

I grabbed some clean clothes and hurried into the bathroom. I made quick work of using the bathroom, fixing my hair in a bun and brushing my teeth. I was in my jean shorts and light green shirt again. Maybe I can see if the shelter has a store of clothing or something. I can't keep wearing the same three items of clothing, day in and day out.

I hurried out to the living room area and found Luke waiting by the front door for me. He silently held his hand out to me. I slipped my fingers in his hand and let him guide me to the shelter's large kitchen for the day of work that lies ahead.
