Chapter 20 As Easy As A-B-C In Dark Times
Marc's POV
"Shit! I think she just passed out!" Oscar blurted as Sang fell to her side on the bed in a heap. "Fuck, she's not breathing! What do we do? I can't even think!"
"Get out of my way," I shoved him aside and bent down next to her, "TOM, we need the Doc! This is his bird! GO GET HELP!" The lights were suddenly flicked on and Tom left the mess hall.
Okay, okay. We have all had CPR training. What did they tell us... Oh yeah, it's the ABC's. "A is for airway." I made sure she was laying on her back, placed my hand on her forehead and tipped it back as I lifted her chin with my other hand's fingers. Then I looked in her mouth to make sure she wasn't choking on anything visible. "B is for breathing." I leaned my face over her open mouth to look, listen and feel. Look for her chest rising, listen for breathing and feel for breath on my face. "Nothing. C is for circulation." Using my pointer and middle finger, I pressed onto her carotid artery at her neck to feel for a pulse for six seconds. There it is! I watched the second hand on my watch while I counted, "1 2 3 4 5 6 7." Now what do I do? She is not breathing, but she has a pulse. "Rescue breathing!" I exclaimed to the room full of onlookers. I pinched her nose and covered my mouth over hers, breathing into her lungs once, then counting, "1 2 3 4 5 6" and breathe. Again, I blew air into her lungs, "1 2 3 4 5 6" and breathe.
The door opened and in plowed all nine of the Blackbourne team. I had just finished giving her a breath and was counting again, "1 2 3 4 5 6" and breath. I covered her mouth with mine and the room erupted into growls.
"WHAT THE FUCK?!" I was yanked away from Sang by Silas, North right next to him, his hand raised in a fist ready to knock me out cold. I put my hands up but Doc was the one to stop them.
"NO!" He commanded and North faltered in his swing. "Marc, I need stats." I didn't move from the spot I was sitting on the floor now, but I informed the Doc about what we had observed and had done. The whole time I spoke he was doing his doctor thing.
"She was talking to us, shaking and crying and then she passed out. She wasn't breathing, so I began the ABC's. No obstruction, she has a pulse of 70, but she wasn't breathing. I had only given her a couple of rescue breaths when you guys came in. How did you get here so fast? How did you know we needed you?"
Doc had continued doing the rescue breathing a few more times when all of a sudden Sang gasped and coughed. Everyone of the Blackbourne team spoke at the same time and encircled her. I looked around the room at everyone else. Am I the only one who see's this? It's as if all nine of them are in love with the same girl! I've seen Kevin this protective of Mindy before. Were they all fighting for her to choose them? That cannot be good.
Owen demanded they all back up and give her and Sean room. When they did, I saw Luke put his arm around Gabe's shoulder in a sideways bro hug. North and Silas both pounded each other on the back. Nathan, Kota and Victor huddled together closely, murmuring quietly. And Owen's hand was on Sean's shoulder as he assessed Sang.
No way they are fighting over her if they are willing to embrace each other with her right there. Are they really going to all fall for the same girl? Could that even work? There are only four girls at camp that are single, Sang is one of them. That leaves Kiera, Makayla and Vivian as the only available females amongst how many single guys? What if the rest of the world really has fallen apart, everyone killing each other off or starving to death. That only leaves those that have shelters like the Academy camps with survivors. I'm sure there are those out there that are not Academy that will survive, "the Preppers". But among our own small society, the ratio of single male to single female is what? Six to one? If this situation is going to last for years, would I be willing to share a wife? Would the single women be willing to be shared? Shit! Why am I even thinking like this?
I focused back on what was going on in front of me. Each one of the Blackbourne team got right up close to Sang, spoke softly to her, hugged her and placed a kiss on her head somewhere. Then Doc spoke authoritatively to Ryan and Lance, who were on guard duty, "Gabriel will be staying with Sang the rest of the night. He will leave before the trial resumes, but my doctor's orders are Sang is not to sleep without one of our team present."
"We can't let you do that!" Ryan protested.
Tom put his hand on Ryan's chest, "the doctor has given explicit orders. We will follow them. We will not damage the health of one of our birds because of some silly court idea. We have too few birds as it is."
Those were my thoughts exactly! It is as if he could read my mind! But then I looked around the room and saw that everyone else must have been thinking along the same lines as me as they watched this unusual exchange. It had a strong feeling of family, more than team. That's what I want. A family, not just a team. I'll have to discuss my thoughts with Axel when we are done with this trial.
Everyone left except for Gabriel. He climbed into the small cot with Sang and they curled around each other. I watched as they both were running their fingers through the other's hair. I had to look away as I felt like I was interfering in a personal, intimate moment. It made my heart squeeze, I want those damn wriggly sparks that he so obviously feels for Sang.
