Chapter Five: One Crane At A Time

Chapter 5

458 paper cranes, 37 mess-up wads of paper, and who knows how many hours later, I heard a knock at the door. It startled me so bad that I flipped back in my chair and crushed a pretty blue one that I worked so hard at perfecting. It was marked with a '427' on the wing. 

"Ugh... " I groaned as the door opened and another teenage girl about my age walked in. She had long brown hair, that was almost perfectly straight. She looked Asian, and yet had large, green eyes. Her nose was perfectly in place and she looked like an anime character. 

The girls eyes widened in shock when she saw me, and I expected the whole "Oh my gosh, Amber Lee!" thing that most teenage girls did when they saw me. 

The totally opposite of what I was expecting, burst out her mouth. "What the heck do you think you're doing? Get out! NOW!" 

My eyes widened in shock and I couldn't think of anything to say. 

She glared at me and asked a little more politely, "Why are you here?"

"B-Belle brought me. She told me about her sister. I'm helping her." I usually wasn't intimidated by girls, but I could tell this girl was different.

"Belle! I am going to kill that child! Ugh! What does she think she's doing bringing some girl here and leaving her!" She ranted on and on for about a minute when she looked up and stared at me. It was a new stare that I hadn't seen on her face yet.

"Amber Lee..?" She just stared. 

"Yeah, that would be me," I replied, happy that it finally turned out my way. 

"Oh my goodness, Belle always chooses the wrong people! Now you're going to go telling everyone aren't you?!? I'm surprised you're even still in this stupid room!" She must have anger management problems, I thought to myself.

"Uhmm, excuse me, but who are you?" I wondered out loud.

"My names Mei [A/N: Pronounced May]. I'm Belle's older sister."

"Really? Don't be mad at me. She practically kidnapped me and put me in here." 

"Yeah. I know. She does that... I'm gonna go get us some sodas before we get started. Sorry for exploding on you." 

I blinked. "You're gonna help?"

"Of course I'm going go help. She's my little sister, I need to help with her wish. Actually, why don't you come with me? You look like you need to stretch. How long have you been in here?"

"No idea. And okay I'll come with. My legs have been cramping up in those little chairs."

"Let's go." We both left the room and walked down the empty hall.

"How did you guys get that room all to yourself? I mean, it's a hospital, it's not like they rent out rooms..." I asked Mei. I had been curious the moment Belle pulled the keys out to unlock the door.

"It's not that hard. They weren't using it for anything, and we just asked the secretary. We told her about the paper crane thing and she happily agreed. I had Belle ask, since she's the cuter one." She smiled at me. "I don't think it's gonna work... But anything to make little Olivia happy." 

"Olivia?" I was curious.

"Belle and I's sister. She has leukemia." She looked at me sadly.

"I'll be here for you. You know, I'm surprised you didn't do the typical teenage girl thing and freak out about me. Why didn't you?" 

"We're all the same, in my eyes. We're all here to live, and then we die. It doesn't matter if you're well known, or at the bottom of the food chain. You're still a life." We rounded a corner, and the halls got busier.

Mei walked into a room that had a label "Cafeteria" on it, and I followed her inside. We walked over to the candy machine and I got a Reese's while Mei got a Snickers. 

A couple minutes later, we were back in the little private room. This time Belle had found us and came with us.

Mei had scolded Belle for being rude to me, but secretly, I was happy that she did. Mei seemed very nice, and I was so glad to meet her.

 About ten minutes later, we started hearing the Harry Potter theme music play.

"Where the heck is that coming from?" Mei asked.

My mind went blank, then had a surge of energy come back to it. "My phone!" 

I dug through my bag and finally found it. "Hello?" 

"Hello this is Dr. Raffery. I received a call from you the other day about an appointment tomorrow? Do you still want to continue that appointment? I'm sorry I missed your call, I was at dinner with my family."

"Oh! Yeah that's totally fine. And tomorrow sounds great! Thanks."

"Alright. See you are tomorrow."

"Buh-bye." I closed my phone and started telling Mei about my paranoid brother.

I looked at the clock on the wall and it said 6:05. No wonder my stomach has been growling! It's dinner time!

"I gotta go guys. I need to be home. Mei can I get your cell number? I wanna come help you some other time."

"Yeah totally! It was so fun hanging out with you! I promise I won't release it to your crazed fans."

"Haha thanks!" I told Belle good bye and thanked her for letting me help her with her sister's cranes. 

On my way to my car, I saw Dave walking down the hall. "Hey Mr Director Dude! How's Justin?" 

"He's fine. He wants to sue me now, but other than that he's fine." He looked at me anxiously. 

"Ahh jeez. I'm sorry about that. I gotta go! See you on the set." I waved and kinda was happy that Justin was suing Dave. He had too much money for his own good. His children were spoiled rotten. It sounds mean of me to say, but Justin would be doing Dave a favor by suing him. 

As soon as I got home, I crawled in bed, and was fast asleep as soon as I hit the pillow.
