Jaded

I knew a girl once
She was hard to find
A sad, lonely heart
With a hollow, jaded mind

I tried to figure out
What it was I could do
To break through that wall
I could never get through

It looked like the best thing
It felt like the worst
Bad things left and right
It was like the girl was cursed

She just wandered in the dark
Like a lost little lamb
I helped her all I could
It's just the person that I am

But as I came to know
The girl inside
She had a war inside herself
She became what she despised

She asked me to help her
But I couldn't if I tried
She fell on the floor
And she started to cry

I said, "This is how it is
This is how life works
There has to be some bad times
Not everything's a perk

You'll just be jogging along
Like you don't give a shit
Then suddenly you fall
Headlong off a cliff

And in the moment you're falling
And you feel like it's the end
You're calling and calling
But nobody lends a hand

But if you break through the madness
Or allow yourself to try
You'll no longer be falling
You might even fly"

She looked up at me then
Tears staining her cheeks
Eyes holding my gaze
But they were filled with defeat

I pat her on the shoulder
And I tell her "That's enough
You'll go far, kid
If you never give up"
