CHAPTER 32

     [ Calvin ]

"You didn't tell me you were going on a date with the hot doctor!" I exclaimed as I followed my mother around the house. She was frantically trying to get her stuff together before her date arrived and my pestering certainly didn't help the case, but I didn't care.

A midnight blue dress hugged her waist and ended just above her knees, which I made a mental note of, just in case she came back home with a relatively shorter dress. Her hairstyle remained the same, mostly, with a deep part down the middle. Her hair never grew past her chin, but the short bob always looked great on her; it framed her round face and brought more attention to her rosy cheeks.

"It's not a date," she corrected me as she jogged down the stairs with a hasty speed and rushed into the kitchen, searching for her car keys.

I folded my arms across my chest as I watched her with a mocking grin. "If it's not a date, then why are you dressed like that?"

She dismissed me by waving her hand in the air and returned her attention to the current task at hand, tugging on all the kitchen drawers. "He's my coworker, Calvin. We're only going to talk about work."

I rolled my eyes. She was definitely going on a date. It kinda sucked that she had the privilege of going on a date before I did. I had been stupid to think that Derek would want to give up sex to go on a date because he never did that with anyone.

She let out a sigh of relief when she found her keys and turned to face me, a smile on her red-stained lips. It was the first time that I had seen her look truly happy in a long while and I really liked seeing her happy. "Okay." She pushed the stray hairs away from her face and fixed her dress. "How do I look?"

I smiled at her. "You look beautiful."

She returned the smile. "Are you sure? Because I think that-"

"Mom," I patronized. "You're the prettiest woman that I've ever seen."

Narrowing her eyes slightly, she placed her hands on her hips in disapproval. "You're gay, Calvin. That's not very convincing."

Sighing, I snatched the car keys from her hands and dropped them into her purse on the kitchen counter. I zipped the purse and held it out for her to hold. "You are gorgeous," I reassured her. "Now hurry up, before the hot doctor thinks you're ditching him." She looked at me for a moment, her electric eyes burning into mine. With time, I saw the hint of a proud smile making its way onto her face, which meant a hug was soon to follow.

And sure enough, she threw her arms around me and pulled me into a tight hug. "Mom," I whined. "Stop it."

Reluctantly pulling away, she smiled and she took her purse from my hands. "Okay, I'm gonna go. Make sure you get your homework done and don't stay up too late." She turned to leave but almost as though a thought entered her mind, she whipped around. "And no Derek."

I sighed. "Mom, he's my boyfriend. You can't keep us away from each other."

"You're grounded," she spat. "As long as you're grounded, you're not allowed to see Derek."

"Okay, okay, I get it." I ushered her out of the door. "Just remember to use a condom, okay?"

Her eyes widened. "Calvin!"

"Bye, mom!" I gave her a brief wave and closed the door before she could say anything else, locking it. I remained by the door until I heard her heels clank against the driveway and the sound of her car door slamming. When I heard the car back out of the driveway and zoom out of the neighborhood, I relaxed my shoulders and walked back into the house. "You can come out of the closet, now!" I shouted with a slight chuckle.
