I hit the ground really hard and rolled to the side into the spiky thorn bush. I watched Nick hit the ground and tumble to the side. A black fog had settled around us. It swarmed through the branches of the tree, twisted and turned around every piece of greenery until it settled just 2 feet above the ground.
The fog started to shimmer a bit, and after a while of staring at it it started to lighten a bit. Like a rainbow after a storm. But instead of turning the beautiful white I had expected it to be, it showed as a booger green that just sat there and swarmed around in circles.
Ok. This was pointless.
Why was I on the ground? Fog wasn't going to hurt me. I wasn't going to be scared of water vapor for goodness sakes. Nick shouldn't be either. I turned and my back laid against the grass. I slowly lifted my hand and concentrated my eyes on the mist. It has lost it's sparkle and just had whisks of darker green that circled around, bored. My hand reached out a bit more, I could see Nick giving me a death glare as if trying to say not to do it. But I was to stubborn to listen to him. I squeezed my eyes shut the moment my hand made contact with the fog. As I opened my eyes I kind of expected my hand to be gone. But no, my hand was perfectly fine.
I watched the fog intertwine with my fingers and turn a deep shade of purple, and it darkened to black again and started to shimmer. I waved my hand around in the air and a small smile crept onto my face.
I heard rustling beside me noticing Nick was trying to make his way over to stop me. As I turned my head to watch him struggle getting over here I felt a sharp pain in my hand. My hand felt asleep almost but much more painful. As if a thousand doctors were trying to give me a tetanus shot in my hand.
I quickly withdrew my hand and held it to my chest. My hand turned a bit red but nothing more. I looked up waiting for the pain to go away and I saw Nick giving me the I told you so look. I looked up into the black fog. It started to circle away and as the light hit my face again I could see a small black scar from the burning of the fog on my index finger.
Nick got up and ran over to me.
"What the heck were you thinking?" Nick scolded. "That was a really stupid thing to do! You could have died if you touched it long enough!"
"Sorry" I muttered.
"Just come on. Your lucky your alive." Nick calmed down as he grabbed my arm. " Now let's see if you can stay alive long enough to get out of this forest, the 13 are coming."
