~FLASHBACK~
“Close your eyes Elliot’” mommy said,” It’s going to be just fine.”
“Mommy? What’s going on?” I whimpered squeezing my eyes shut.
“It’s nothing baby, “ she cooed wiping away my tears,” daddy just doesn’t feel well.”
“ANNA! ELLIOT! WHERE ARE YOU!?” Daddy screamed.
I let out a sob; My mother covered my mouth with her hand so daddy wouldn’t hear. We were hiding in the back of my closet behind my giant doll house.
“ANNA YOU CAN’T HIDE HER FROM ME!!”
“Elliot don’t think; hide your thoughts,” a voice said in my head.
“Mommy?” I thought back.
“Yes baby, it’s me. Keep your thoughts quiet so he doesn’t hear you.”
“Mommy I’m scared; why can we talk to each other like this?”
“We are special baby.”
“How mommy?”
“Later angel be quiet.”
“ANNA IV’E FOUND YOU!!” Daddy screamed from outside the closet door.
I threw myself into mommy’s arms and sobbed. The closet door was torn from the hinges and daddy snatched me out of mommy’s arms. I screamed and struggled in his iron grip. Mommy lunged from the closet and tackled daddy to the ground.
“Mommy!” I screamed as I was thrown from daddy’s arms. Just before I hit the ground I threw up my palms and stopped.
“Mommy! Why am I flying?” I yelled in my head.
“Later baby later.”
Daddy grabbed mommy’s head and was going to break her neck; he looked me in the eye and his eyes glazed over. He got up and walked from the room in a robotic trance. I launched myself into mommy’s arms and buried my face into her shoulder.
“Mommy is it ok now?”
“Yes baby.”
“Mommy why are we special?”
“We have super powers darling.”
“Like Wonder Woman and Superman?”
“Kind of, but you have to go somewhere now baby.”
“Where mommy. I don’t want to leave you!”
“It’s ok sweetie I’ll come see you, but it’s a place little boys and girls like you go to be safe.”
“Ok mommy, when are you going to take me?”
“Right now.”
An hour later all of my clothes and such were piled into the car and we began our long trip to The Academy.
~REALITY~
Owww… My head was pounding. I touched the back of my head; Damn it, no wonder it hurts there’s a knot the size of a goose egg at the knap of my neck.
“Ellie?” Someone asked.
Urg… I don’t want to open my eyes; I just know the florescent lights are going to murder them.
“Ellie the light is off it’s fine.”
Wait how did they know I was thinking that?
“Come on Ellie open up and I’ll explain.”
I opened my eyes and looked around. The curtains were drawn and the only light source in the room was the lamp on the side table. Shit that was real we are still in this hell hole.
“Very much real Ellie,” Simon said from an armchair beside my bed.
“Can you explain what’s going on?” I asked sitting up and wincing in pain.
“Sitting up probably isn’t the greatest idea,” Gwen said from the other bed clutching an icepack to her head.
“Sorry Gwen I didn’t mean to hurt you like that I-”
“No it’s fine El,” she said cutting my apology short,” I understand your reasoning.”
“Wait.. Where is he,” Simon said to Gwen.
“He was just there,” Gwen said pointing to a chair positioned at the end of my bed with a worn leather jacket thrown over the back.
“Where’s who?”
Simon and Gwen exchanged a nervous look but stayed silent. Confused I thought back to before I passed out. My eyes widened; he’s here.. My real father is here.
“My father is really here?” I asked.
They nodded.
“Why is he here?”
“I don’t know Ellie,” Simon said,” he just showed up.”
“I guess I better go speak to him huh?”
“Yea…” Gwen and Simon sighed.
I stood up got an icepack from the mini fridge and slapped it to the back of my head. Grabbing the door handle I stepped through the door and made my way down the endless flight of stairs.
“Lee?” Mr. Green said from the couch in the lobby.
“Mr. Green what is it?” I asked.
“Lee I’m not Mr. Green.”
“What do you mean of course you are.”
“Well technically I am, but Mr. Green was never real.”
“What? Mr. Green stop playing games have you seen my father?”
“Lee I am your father.”
Mr. Green got up from the couch and suddenly began to change shape growing taller and muscular. His hair turned orange and grew to his shoulders, the gray eyes I had always known suddenly turned to a deep evergreen. Mr. Green was my father in disguise all along he had been the one to look out for me. My world was spinning I could feel the darkness taking over again, the last thing I remember is seeing my fathers worried face as he rushed to catch me before I hit the ground.
