   ~FLASHBACK~

“Mommy who is that boy?” I heard Gwen ask mommy on Easter. Gwen was jealous of  me; she wanted to go to The Academy and every August she would beg mommy and Perry to go with me. This would be the year she would get her wish, only I knew.

“What boy Angel?” Mommy had replied confused.

“The one in the Superman costume by the willow tree,” she said pointing at the ghost through the leafy tendrils.

His name was Peter Langley, he told me he had lived in our home for twelve years of his life until the tragic accident that had killed him. He was climbing up through the branches of the great magnolia that used to stand feet from the willow. Moving too quickly he lost his footing and fell; his cape snagged on one of the branches and he hung there. Peter died from a broken neck, he was killed instantly suffering nothing. His mother Linda was worried when he didn’t come in for lunch so she went to look for him in the back yard. Linda also died that day of a heart attack, I haven’t seen her though I guess she moved on into the light . That night when Jack Langley found both his wife and his only son dead he went insane. He pulled his sons body from the tree and brought his family into the parlor, he spent the rest of the night chopping down the magnolia. When the magnolia fell Jack was crush by it; Jacks spirit must have joined Linda’s in heaven. Peter did not want to go just yet; he wont tell me why but he says he has “unfinished business”.

“I don’t see him baby,” mommy said.

“His name is Peter mommy,” I found myself saying.

“Oh yea? Who is Peter sweetie?” Mommy asked obviously thinking it was a game.

“He’s a dead boy mommy,” I said,” He died when he was twelve, his mommy and daddy died here too he told me so.”

Mommy’s eyes got wide and Gwen started to cry; she was afraid of Peter but I’m not sure why he was a nice ghost, not like Mr. Carrington who died of a stroke in the kitchen; he was grumpy.

“Gwen it’s ok,” I said hugging her,” Peter is a nice ghost he wont hurt you.”

“But Elliot what about the others?”

“They’re not always going to be nice Gwennie, but you’ve got to learn not to be afraid.”

“How El?”

“Mommy and Perry are going to let you come to The Academy this year with me, right mommy?”

“Yes Angel,” mommy said with tears in her eyes.

After that summer Gwen was enrolled into The Academy; the last time I ever saw Peter was the day we left for The Academy while he talked to Gwen. I guess I had finally figured out why Peter stayed.

                                                 ~REALITY~

I’m really getting tired of passing out all the time… This time when I woke up I was in the back seat of our stolen truck with my head in Simon’s lap; He was snoring loudly with his head leaned against the window. I sat up groggily checking my surroundings; Gwen was in the passenger seat conked out as well. The driver was someone I was afraid to look at; I knew who it was, but I didn’t want to believe it. How could it be that the man I had trusted with my life had ended up being the man who gave it to me?

“Looks like someone’s finally awake,” said my dad from the front seat.

“Why are you here?” I asked.

“You found out who you are that’s why I am here Lee,” He said,” It was your mothers dying wish that I disguise myself and look after you, and if you were to find out your true identity before your twentieth birthday I was to reveal myself.”
