A Rigorous Ride

“It’s so beautiful..” I whispered.

The Roman architecture was absolutely stunning; every house we passed was even more extravagant than the one before. They were all the color of hard candy so bright and beautiful. Then we started to pull into the actual town; the store fronts were had the weirdest signs up.

“Did that sign say buy one dragon get another half off?” I asked shocked to the core.

“They have a lot of things here that aren’t in the human world,” Simon replied.

“Wow!”

A dragon flew out of the sky and landed on the ground a few meters in front of our truck.

“Holy rat shit!” Gwen yelled skidding to a stop.

“Calm down Gwennie, Jangada wont hurt us I asked for a dragon to be sent to take us to the castle,” my dad said.

“Oh right, I forgot I haven’t been to Vampiriznia but once before.”

“That’s a real dragon?” I asked.

“Yep she’s a beauty too,” Simon replied.

“What’s she for?”

“We ride her,” my dad answered opening his door.

“WHAT! There is no way in hell I am getting on that thing!” I yelled shaking my head vigorously.

“You will or you can go back out there into the real world. Alone,” My dad said shutting the door.

“Fine,” I said steamily.

We all got out of the car and followed my father to stand in front of the large navy and indigo beast. It threw its humongous head back and roared, I screeched and hid behind Simon.

“It’s fine Ellie,” Simon said laughing, “Jan wont bite.”

“You didn’t really live in Texas before you moved to Maine did you?” I asked.

“Nope.”

“You lived here and came to Maine because..”

“My parents knew we would be around the same age and volunteered me to come help look after you.”

“So you were only friends with me because your parents “volunteered you to?” I said angrily.

“It wasn’t like that Ellie I swear!” Simon said defensively,” I wanted to be friends with you the moment you first came up to me at The Academy; I thought you were the greatest person I ever met.”

“How do I know that’s true?”

“Elliot he’s telling you the truth,” My father said stepping between us,” he was literally ecstatic to meet the famous Azaria Allgood.”

“My last name is Allgood?”

“Yes.”

“Am I forgiven Ellie?” Simon said stepping up with his arms outstretched for a hug.

“I guess,” I said accepting his embrace.

“Well let’s get on Jan,” Gwen said awkwardly.

“Uhg I was hoping I could get out of that,” I said stepping out of Simon’s hug.

As everybody else approached Jangada, I stood back hesitating.

“Can’t we go some other way,” I asked,” Like in a car or something?”

“El this is the only way into the Castel,” Gwen said stepping onto the rope ladder hanging from Jan’s side,” Trust me if there was another way I would take it.”

“Gwen your not making this any easier,” Simon said nudging me forward.

“I don’t like this,” I said through clenched teeth.

“Suck it up,” My father said sternly climbing up behind Gwen who was already halfway up,” No daughter of mine is afraid of dragons.”

“So now I’m your daughter?” I muttered under my breath.

“I heard that and yes.”

“Its ok Ellie,” Simon said,” Its not as bad as it looks ill be right behind you.’

“Promise?” I asked sticking out my little finger.

“Promise,” he said linking his pinky with mine,” now giddy up cowgirl.”

I looked up at Jan and goose bumps rose up on my arms. Taking a few hesitant steps towards the creature I put one hand upon the wooden step. With Simon close behind I climbed up the side of Jan’s scaly side. I took a deep breath when I finally got to the top; Gwen held out a hand for me to grab and pulled me up.

“Now that wasn’t so bad now was it?” Gwen asked

“It was terrifying,” I said shuttering.

“We still haven’t started flying yet,” she replied laughing,” and you thought you were scared then.”

“Gwen your not helping,” Simon said climbing onto Jan’s large back.

“Everyone get comfortable,” My father said straddling the dragons narrow back.

“Uhg I really don’t want to do this,” I said.

“Aww come on Elliot man up.”

“I’m a girl!” I said loudly but still sat down behind Gwen anyway wrapping my arms around her small waist. Simon sat himself down close behind me and mimicked my position.

“On we go Jan,” my father said.

“Yes sir,” Jan seconded in a rumbling voice and began to flap her gigantic wings..

“She can talk!?” I yelled as we began to take off.

I buried my face into Gwen’s back with my eyes squeezed shut. The wind whistled in my ears and combed its way through my wild hair that had fallen from its elastic long ago. Gosh. I feel like I’m being wind raped.

“Really Ellie wind raped?” Simon chuckled into my ear.

“Shut up! That’s how it feels,” I said back.

“You know if you opened your eyes it would be a lot more fun.”

“But I don’t wanna..”

“Come on Ellie live a little.”

“Fine.”

I opened my eyes hesitantly, but as soon as I caught a glimpse of the ground below they shot open in surprise. It was so beautiful! I can't belive im such an idiot for being afraid of this it's amazing!

"Indeed it is," my father replied ," Jan its time for a landing."

Jan began to depart from the sky slowly, I was sad that it was suddenly over and I hadn't enjoyed most of it.

"Welcome home Lee," my father said gesturing to the magnificent castel that stood before us.

"Home sweet home," Gwen said happily.
