Twelve years before..... ( Lani is four at this time... )Narrator,
"I love you!" Nick, four year old Lani's dad said picking her up. Lani giggled cupping her dads cheeks planting a kiss on her lips making the kissing sound afterwards.
"I love you too daddy!" She yelled giving her another hug. Nick smiled letting go. Nick has been away in Iraq four two years fighting war and he finally got the chance to visit for a whole week.
Lani's mom Kiana, stayed behind letting them have their moment. When nick stood up she gave me a small smile sensing the awkwardness between.
"So you go act like I'm not here?" Nick joked standing up walking over to Kiana. She smiled a little harder holding her arms out for a hug. He kissed her lips pulling away giving her butterflies in her stomach.
Just two years ago they were telling each other they needed to move on with theirs lives. Kiana didn't think she could wait for him, but once he left she never even talked to another man on that level.
They walked out the airport like a real family. Lani in her dad's arm and Kiana holding his hand. They put the luggage in the car and quickly strapped little Lani in her booster seat.
Laughs and giggles filled the car until the unforgettable happened. A huge SUV hit the front of their car making the car do a turn. The car flipped over completely. Kiana's head hit the window instantly knocking her unconscious while her dad tried his best to undo his seat belt to help his family.
All you could hear was little lani's loud cries and sirens blaring. Nick began screaming for Lani and Kiana as he continued trying to break free.
"Lani!" He yelled frantically. He only had one thing on his mind and that was to get his family out safely.
"Daddy!" Lani couldn't move. Her leg was stuck in between the seats. She began to feel light headed and soon everything went black.

Two days after the crash Lani had finally awaken from her coma. She remembered it all and as soon as her eyes shot open she screamed for her parents."Mommy! Daddy!" A nurse soon entered her room smiling brightly knowing the news she would have to deliver to the innocent four year old.
"Hi sweetie." She stated calmly. Lani calmed down seeing that she was around an adult, she felt safer.
"Where's my mommy and daddy?" The nurse bit her lip, moving loose strands of lani's hair out her face.
"They're in a better place babe..." She trailed off not knowing exactly how to tell a four year old her parents are deceased.
"What?" Lani was way too young to understand any of this.
"Sometimes, people have to go away for a while. Like your mommy and daddy...they had to leave to be at peace. You'll see them again, just not now." She felt that was the best way to say it but the look on Lani face said different. She still didn't understand.
"Why did they leave. Why didn't they take me?" The nurse sighed giving Lani a hug. She wondered why she had to be the one to tell her this.
"They um, they didn't really know they had to leave. It was a surprise. They weren't trying to leave on purpose...." The nurse knew she was doing a horrible job at this.
"Oh...." Was all Lani could say. She didn't understand what the lady was saying.
"How about we color and watch cartoons?" Lani nodded her head smiling. The nurse gave a sigh of relief happy to get off that topic.
Two weeks after all of this chaos Lani was released from the hospital and tooken straight to the state orphanage. She was only four years old and deserved none of this, all she knew was that her parents were gone for a little while and that sue would soon be reconnected. She hoped it was soon because the orphanage wasn't nice to her at all. She was constantly mistreated and no one stuck up for her.
She just wanted her parents back....
