My eyes fluttered open and I saw I was in a familiar room. My room. I was back at the orphanage.
I realised I was under the scratchy sheets in my bed and I was wearing pajamas.
Wait...who changed my clothes?
At that point I noticed there was a slumped figure on a chair beside my bed. His hair covered one eye and he wasn't wearing glasses but I could tell it was Nick.
I tried to get up without him waking but as soon as I moved, the bed creaked and his head shot up.
"Hey" he mumbled while rubbing his eyes.
Oh my god he's so hot.
"Um hey. Uh did you change my clothes?" I asked shakily.
"Oh yeah, I didn't look at you naked...too much" he said winking at me.
Oh shit no. No no no no no. He would've seen the scars. There goes my one chance of making a friend.
I felt tears grow in my eyes, desperately close to falling. I got up and ran out of the room. I didn't want him to see me crying. That's a sign of weakness and I wasn't going to give that.
When I exited I didn't know where to go. Left, right, or down the stairs. I heard Nick calling my name and I bolted downstairs.
I looked around to see a bunch of small children on the floor, eating cereal and staring at me. one of them got scared and started wailing.
Dammit I hate when children scream. Its so annoying.
I did my best to walk past the kids calmly but it was hard to try and cover the tears running down my cheeks. they all continued staring and I felt extremely self conscious so I started running again.
I eventually made it to the front door of the building and opened it making cool air rush on me, ruffling my pajamas. I opened it all the way to see a girl about my age with her finger paused halfway to the doorbell. She would've been quite pretty if it wasn't for the ragged clothing and the dirt smeared across her face.
"Please help me" she said, right before falling to the ground.
I stared in shock for a few seconds before seeing the blood oozing from her right shoulder. I looked back to call for help, only to see Nick was already running towards me.
Nick didn't even take one second to look what happened, he just picked the girl up and brought her inside.
I cautiously walked outside to see if there was any clue on how the girl got hurt. I walked up and down the road and saw nothing suspicious. I stated making my way back when something caught my eye.
A small piece of material was stuck in one of the grating panels in the middle of the road. I ran over and knelt down next to it. The image I saw inside would be burnt in my brain for the rest of my years.
Inside was four mangled bodies of children, children I knew lived at the orphanage. The metallic scent of blood filled my nostrils as I continued to stare. One boy, who was about eleven, stared up at me with lifeless eyes, or... eye. The other eye was no longer recognizable, just a bullet hole and a lot of blood filled its place.
I couldn't look anymore. I quickly leaned to the side and puked up everything I held in my stomach.
