Olivia Rose Spencer
I had only 5 hours of sleep this night, however, I was already bright and early in my balcony waving at my parents and my brother who were making their way towards my apartment.
"Hey there!" I quickly said to my parents, turning quickly to my little brother. "Hello, Ollie!"
"Olive! I've missed you so much!" Oliver gave me a big hug and I spun him around. "You're so tanned, Olive, have you been to the beach?"
"Well, of course, Ollie, you know I love going to the beach!"
"Can we go?"
"Of course we can! Why don't you, Mom and Dad stay in the living room for a bit? Mr Snowie is there."
"Is he? He's so cute!" my brother ran to the living room, to see Mr Snowie, my cat.
"What a wonderful idea, Olivia, we'll just hang around in the living room, see how you're doing," said my mother.
I disappeared into my bedroom, thinking about what my mother just said. The thing was, she wanted me out of the house once I was an adult by law, but whenever she comes here she always snoops around, checking how I do this or that, if I dust my bookshelves or if I wash up the dishes.
I put some suncream, my towel, and some clothes in a bag to take to the beach, as I text Emma who's in Florida with her grandparents.
"Mr Snowie is so beautiful! Does he eat a lot?" asked Oliver, as we were heading to the beach.
"Sometimes, but he sleeps all day, so he doesn't work out," it was true, I had this cat for four years now and all he does is sleep. Anyway, I love him no matter what and I'm always cuddling with him at my house.
"Are your friends still pretty?"
"Of course they are, they always were."
"Are they here?"
"No, they aren't. Emma is in Florida and Phoebe is in LA"
"Can we talk to them?"
"Of course, we can. They'd love to hear from you."
Even though Oliver is only ten, he's always trying to charm my friends. Of course, since Ollie is so cute, Emma and Phoebe are always swooning over him.
We spent the whole morning at the beach, swimming and making sand castles. I've made pasta for lunch, so we ate at my apartment. Dad told me that he had made it to the executive board of Stanford and they wouldn't be able to come here as often as they did before. I was happy for my dad, I really was, I just wished that sometimes, they'd be closer to me. But they weren't close to me, and they never wanted to, so I had to suck it up because this is what my life was. After lunch, we skyped Emma and Phoebe, because Oliver missed them.
"Hey ladies!" said Oliver, whilst waving.
"Ownnn, he's sooo cute!" said Emma. "I wish I had a little brother like him, Liv."
"He's so annoying, believe me," I chuckled and ruffled Ollie's hair.
"He's not annoying, Liv!" said Phebs, also in awe with Oliver.
"See, sis, Phoebe agrees with me, I'm not annoying."
We chatted for a little bit more and afterward, we returned to the beach. We couldn't go swimming because the flag was red, so my parents laid down and tried to sleep a little bit, whilst Ollie and I, we were playing hide and seek.
"Hey Ollie, do you mind waiting a little bit with Mom and Dad while I go and just grab a glass of water?" I was out of breath and thirsty. "Do you want anything?"
"No, Olive, I'm fine, I'll just wait here," Ollie flashed me a thumbs up, as well as a wide grin, sitting down next to our parents.
I made my way to one of the cafés at the beach, drank a water bottle and came back. As I was getting closer to the spot where my parents and Ollie were, I realized that Ollie was nowhere to be seen. Mom and Dad were lying down on their towels, Mom was sleeping and Dad was reading the newspaper.
"Hey Dad, where's Oliver?" I asked, bouncing from a foot to another, slightly nervous.
"Oh, he said he was going to play by the sea."
"Thanks, Dad."
I hurried off to the sea, scrutinizing the area to find Oliver. I couldn't see him anywhere and I was starting to get nervous, my palms began sweating, as well as my breathing started to become ragged.
"Oliver!" I called out to the sea.
The waves were bigger and bigger, the sea was possibly dangerous for someone who wasn't that much of a great swimmer. I was a much better swimmer than Oliver, so if he was off in the sea, he must have been in trouble to prevent from drowning. I kept calling his name until I saw it: a boy about Oliver's size, with his blonde hair and holding a red ball in his hands.
"Ollie!" I knew it was him, when the boy looked over at me, only for a big wave to come and making him go underwater.
I scrambled to take my shirt as well as my shorts, leaving both items in the sand. Where were the asshats that are called lifeguards anyway? They should know better than to let a boy like Oliver to go on his own to the sea. I looked around and saw that they weren't here.
I ran to the water, immediately diving in and swimming towards Oliver. The water was cold against my skin, but right now, it didn't matter. All I cared about was reaching Oliver and bring him back to the beach. There was a heavy pain in my heart, as a hundred different scenarios played out in my mind, all of them ending with me losing my brother.
"Oliver, what were you doing here?" I asked, once I finally reached him. He hugged me and I tried to support our weight in order not to drown.
"My ball got carried away in the waves, sis, I'm so sorry..."
"Shhh, that's fine," I started waving to a pair of lifeguards that were swimming in our direction. Finally, one of them reached us. "Here, take Oliver back, please."
"Miss we should wait until my colleague arrives to take you back."
"I'll be fine, seriously, just take my brother back, I'm afraid he has been in cold water for too much."
"Still miss, we can't leave you here, you already swam all this way to find your brother..."
"I'm a strong swimmer, really. Why don't you give me that buoy and I'll wait here?"
"Well, fine, my colleague shouldn't take long."
The lifesaver gave me a buoy that I immediately held on to and started swimming away with my brother. I was a bit tired from swimming so fast and against such a strong current.
Next thing that happens, well, I don't know what hit me. Literally, hit me. I felt a strong wave hitting me on all sides of my body, followed by what felt like a rock in my head. I immediately fell forward, diving into the water, gulping what felt like gallons of water. I held on to the buoy, trying not to drown but another strong wave hit me and I let it go.
Everything that happened afterwards is a blur, I only remember a strong arm wrapping around me and a hand holding onto mine, before everything was pitch black.
