CHAPTER FOUR (edited)
Jack opened his eyes. The morning sunlight poured down on him through the branches of the pine trees. Last night he found a place to stay, it was a wide ditch that was surrounded by huge pine trees. He used his backpack as a not-so-comfy pillow. Jack quickly shoved his hand into his jacket’s pocket. The card. He felt its scratchy surface. It can't be. Collin? Alive? But why did it say Trasper? He wasn't a Trasper, he was a Fiscun. Jack shook his head. He was stupid. A coward. How could he put his hopes up so high? How could he believe he would find his own son? There was probably millions of Collins in the world. Besides, Collin is dead. Dead in the fire caused by Grougis and his troops! By Jack's worst enemy!
With anger Jack pounded his fist into the tree’s trunk. Forget it for now, he thought. Jack stood up and reached into the knapsack to pull out that mysterious notebook. It was one of those old spiral types. The cover was half ripped and the pages were stained as if someone spilled something on them. The first several pages were blank. But there were a few that weren’t. Half of the notebook was full of numbers that meant nothing to Jack but there were a few names he recognized--Dr. Niclion and his own! Jack’s curiosity grew. Me? Dr. Niclion? There must be someone out there with information about my connection to Dr. Niclion! Jack’s thoughts swirled with slight fear. He had to find out what those numbers meant. He would take them to headquarters.
Jack put the notebook in his worn out backpack. He picked up the knapsack and hurled it in the stream nearby. Just then Jack heard a young boy’s voice yelling, “Hey! What are you doing with my knapsack?”
Jack froze.
