CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Katherine grabbed all the clothes she found in the drawer and stuffed Jack’s old backpack. A few days passed since Jack had returned. Katherine wasn’t fully happy though. For her, full happiness was the Lord, and her family: Jack, Miya, Nedit and the others. She had to focus on getting ready to leave this surprisingly cozy cabin. When Katherine was at a younger age she thought she knew the meaning of cozy: a huge sofa, a coffee table watching an enormous flat plasma TV screen. Not anymore. Now even a small, soft pillow would be cozy enough. Katherine emptied all the drawers. They needed to take everything that could give them warmth, or survival. Katherine chose seven ID cards that she put in an inside pocket of the backpack. She chose each card for Miya, Nedit, the "perdido" siblings-Lina and Nellie, Danny, Katy and her little brother Georgie.
While Katherine did that, Jack hunted for food. He searched for any kind of food like vegetables, squirrels, rabbits or fruits. What kind of plan does he have up his sleeve for Spike? She thought. Katy walked around the cabin limping. She was “cleaning” around making sure everything looked just like it was before they came.
Katherine was putting a blanket in the backpack when she noticed an eighth ID inside. The picture was a boy with black, straight hair and a crooked smile. Collin, she gasped. Tears welled up but she didn’t try to wipe them away. She knew this boy: her favorite nephew. It was the only one she had anyway. He was a blessing and such a support in her life. Something in him told her that being so…..so holy was possible! That it was possible to overcome hard situations and to always be happy. Oh how she missed him!
Just then the front door opened and Katherine quickly shoved the ID back inside. She stood up and walked up to Jack.
"Anything?"
"Yes. I have three squirrels, a little rabbit-looking animal and fruits."
Katherine noticed that he was beaming while he talked. She was proud of him. Jack was trying to help in any way even though he was really hurt. God bless him! She prayed. Jack had started to pull an animal out of the bag but Katherine shook her head.
"You know I hate to see all those little animals, dead."
He hesitated.
"Oh, right."
She smiled. Thank you, Lord! Thank You for Jack, for Katy and the other children. Thank You for Jacob and for helping us and leading us. You were with us all this time. And I believe You will be. I love you, Lord. In your precious name. Amen. Katherine silently prayed.
Then, Katy spoke up.
"I think we’re ready to go."
They packed up and headed out. The storm had passed and rain dripped off the leaves. Their shoes drowned in the wet soil and puddles. The sunlight streamed through the tall trees and lightened up their way. Everything looked sprinkled-wet and so renewed, refreshed. They walked, all of them lost in their own stream of thought. Katy limped but was able to walk along Jack and Katherine They all felt happy and.....safe.
