CHAPTER SEVEN (edited)

Too late. Those two words felt like a slap on Katherine’s face. The cave was empty. No. No! It can’t be. But it was reality.

“Kathy? They’re gone.”

Katherine sobbed. The Gramblers took them, maybe even killed them. Those people meant a lot to her.

“No…,” she whispered, “it can’t be. Katy let’s search the cave.”

Katy and Katherine searched inch of the place. The rocky low hallways were too dark too search but they searched the storage room and the other rooms they usually used. But they found nothing and nobody. Not a trace of anything.

“Wait a minute,” said Katy. She mentioned Katherine to follow. She led her through one of those low hallways into a small room Katherine never seen before. The room was damp and cold.

“I found this room with Danny a while ago. He and I would pray in here sometimes.”

Katy’s voice sounded unsure but steady.

“Kathy, there’s no trace at all. Not a trace of the blankets and clothes either. I don’t think they were caught or anything. I think they ran and hid.”

Now it hit her. Katherine panicked so much she didn’t think clearly.

“Oh my goodness! You’re right. Maybe we should look around and maybe we’ll find some clues.”

They searched in silence. Katherine couldn’t concentrate. They were safe, possibly, but where? How?

“Oh Kathy!” There was a call from the further corner to the left. Katherine came up and looked at what Katy was pointing at. Katy was pointing at the wall. At first Katherine couldn’t make out the crooked handwriting on the wall. It was Jacob’s writing. It said, ‘left to safety. The tree house’

A smile appeared on Katherine’s face. Yes. They made it. The message was very clear. The treehouse was a smaller cave but the entrance was hidden with a big oak tree. The branches curled, hugging the opening of the cave. That’s how it became the treehouse. They had hidden there before but it had been only her, Jack, Jacob and Danny.

The walk from here to the treehouse is a few days. Maybe even a week. Katherine prayed that they would catch up to their dear friends soon. Katherine suddenly had an urge to hug Katy. Surprised, Katy smiled.

“I love you, dear. Thank you for your help right now. God bless you!”

“God bless you too, Kathy.”
