CHAPTER EIGHT  (edited)

“…in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen,” Jack finished his prayer.

Mike turned out to be a Christian too and to Jack’s relief; Mike was a spy in the secret group that Jack was in. He had been a spy for years now. They prayed together. It comforted Jack to know that he could rely on someone like the Lord. Mike agreed to accompany Jack on his trip to headquarters.

“Hey um…Jack? I’m sorry about your son,” said Mike.

“It’s fine, Mike. It was God’s will.” A sad smile appeared on Jack’s face.

Suddenly Jack remembered Katherine and the families he left behind. He remembered Nedit. That weak but smart boy, he was a big help. He had to smile at the memory of the cute Miya. She was a real darling. A laugh escaped his lips. The “perdido” siblings were very humorous and sweet girls. They were the only ones that could think of climbing trees to use as a watch tower or rub two sticks together to make fire, when it rained. Jacob Nabrask. Anyone would have cried in the sight of him. Jacob was sick with infarct: a deadly disease from the lack of food and rest. Jack always felt sorry for Jacob’s son.

“Mike, have you ever seen a sick person, which has been very sick most of his life but still has hope? Jacob was and still is in horrible situations and circumstances but he praises God with songs each morning! I mean, I don’t understand. Someone’s so sick and has a not-so-gear life but still goes on. If I was in his place i would've given up.”

There was a pause before Mike answered

“It’s God’s will. That is the person’s destiny for God’s miracle and glory to be made. Remember the blind man? The nobleman said to Jesus that the man was blind because he or his parents had sinned. But Jesus said that the man was born blind for God’s glory to be done. This Jacob man has strong faith in the Lord and his hope is beyond his circumstances. He gazes above, knowing that something bigger and greater is awaiting him. He believes that God is with him no matter what. Our Lord is faithful to us.”

Jack’s mind faded back to the families. The Jonsens: just a sister and a toddler boy: Katy and Georgie. He had always thought Katy and Jacob’s son, Danny made up a nice couple. God bless them and Georgie. It was hard keeping such a small child, healthy. He would always get the best food that was found. Sometimes Katy was generous enough to give him her portion of food, when he asked for it.

Jack sighed. The authorities and their laws claiming that death would be to all who help the third children. Just because of the country’s wide hunger and lack of food the Gramblers decided to kill every third child born. They think that would help them feed people. All those third children and fourth children, all of them are with Katherine. He missed them. But it was too late to turn back. He just had to get to the headquarters.

Suddenly, he heard Mike gasp beside him. And Jack was pulled down and pinned to the ground by Mike.

            "Wha-?"

"Shh," Whispered Mike. "Keep it down. I thought I heard something. It might be a Grambler’s troop."

Jack listened closely. But he didn’t hear anything, just the sound of his heart beat that seemed to beat louder. Then he heard it. It was a loud, indescribable sound similar to thunder. It made his ears ring.

            KA-BOOM!!!!

Three words glowed in Jack’s brain before he slipped into unconsciousness. Gramblers. Bomb. Headquarters.
